Avatar face capture

Nov. 30, 2009by: Paul Tassi

I know what you're thinking, another day, another AVATAR featurette, but I promise this one is worthwhile.

Not only does it feature a shit ton of new footage, it's perhaps the most interesting look yet at the absolute insanity that went on behind the scenes to bring this movie to life. The highlight of the video for me comes at around the four minute mark where real-life Zoe Saldana is juxtaposed against her Na'vi counterpart, and you can see just how nuanced the facial expression capture camera rig they came up with actually is. I've never seen anything quite like it.

I don't think we're going to be able to tell if we can actually believe the Na'vi can work without being creepy until we're all strapped down for three hours wearing 3D glasses in an IMAX theater, but after watching this video, I feel like I almost owe it to them to be impressed. See for yourself below.

Update: Only Hulu version available now because Fox hates everyone outside of North America.

Extra Tidbit: I can't tell if this movie would be a lot of fun or complete hell to shoot.

i was a sceptic on first footage viewing of the movie, but after this? I'm sold. Hulk 2003 and gollum were the closest to get facial expressions looking that almost that good, but of course this blows it out the water...WOW!!!!!!

The part about Cameron picking his camera angles after the performances were done by moving his own camera around is outstandingly awesome.

---------

you know, i think people have forgotten, but that was what a lot of the talk about new technological advances was about before the movie got started. i think a lot of people got themselves to thinking that it was about some new animation technique, but it was just about how filming CG scenes would be revolutionized.

Awestruck!

I think it would be a combination of "fun in hell" to make this movie. I was floored from watching this and like I said before Cameron knows what a great movie going experience is.

Face Capture

I don't understand how or why this is supposed to be so much better than what Zamekis did with Beowolf and Christmas Carol. Is it better or the same? Looks the same at least, to me.

trust me i was the same way, but this is far beyond beowulf. Some parts here don't look like animation and i'm a hard critic.

there's more to the technology used for this film that they didn't even show in this featurette- like the Light Stage:
as seen in this cinema 2.0 demo [link]

If you can't watch it on Hulu, go on YouTube and search "Making a Scene Avatar". There'll be 2 or 3 that come up right at the top.

Great featurette, even if the movie blows, I'll probably still pick up the BluRay for the features alone.

It's really sureral how I don't give a flying fuck at all about this movie... No interest... None at all. Zero. Yes, I'm gonna watch it (as every big Hollywood movie - since that's what cinemas were build for) but still... Strange and funny somehow.

I BELIEVE

that this film will change film making forever. James Cameron has worked so much on this movie. the special effects are spectacular, Emotion capture is seriously what makes the movie. facial expressions are so important. the story as well is so important and i think that James Cameron has came up with an epic original story. The action just looks jaw-dropping (in a fucking awesome way) the music is outstanding, the acting looks top notch. even the running time of 189 minutes is very impressive.

I'M SO THERE. December 18th can't come any sooner.
