Batman/Superman to film in Detroit beginning early 2014. Plus read Andrew Kevin Walker's unused script from 2002

Aug. 29, 2013by: Alex Maidy

When MAN OF STEEL 2 begins shooting in Detroit early next year it will bring $131 million to the state of Michigan and mark another cityscape standing in for Metropolis and Gotham City. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, and the rest of the cast will film for three months early in 2014 in Detroit for what will amount to the majority of the shooting of the MAN OF STEEL sequel.

The still untitled BATMAN/SUPERMAN movie has already raised eyebrows with the casting of Affleck and the rumors of Bryan Cranston joining as villain Lex Luthor. It remains to be seen what the story will be exactly as writer David Goyer is undoubtedly rushing to finish the script in time.

In using Detroit as the setting for the sequel, director Zack Snyder had this to say:

“Detroit is a great example of a quintessential American city, and I know it will make the perfect backdrop for our movie.".

While we may not know the story yet, this is not the first attempt at a BATMAN/SUPERMAN film. In fact, back in 2002 Andrew Kevin Walker (SEVEN, THE GAME) wrote a script for the film then titled ASYLUM. You can read the screenplay online now via the embed below. I doubt any of it will be recycled for the Snyder film, but it is always cool to look back at what could have been.

MAN OF STEEL 2 aka BATMAN VS SUPERMAN aka SUPERMAN VS BATMAN opens on July 17, 2015.

Detroit? Won't that leave Superman with no buildings to destroy? Hmm, I suppose he could crush bits of rubble into smaller bits of rubble?

Or maybe he has to *rebuild* Detroit as part of his community service for destroying Metropolis?

Detroits even a lil Unrealistic for a Comic Book movie

There's so much crime in Detroit Batman would be up all night fighting crime, he'd have to smoke crack and meth just to keep up. but I guess he would be in luck. Detroit makes Gotham look like Beverly Hills.

Looks like they're going for a very Tim Burton - Gotham vibe, with a bit of inspiration from Batman Begins.

Whoa, the guy who wrote Seven wrote a "Could've been" Batman/Superman film? I always thought it was just Akiva Goldsman involved. Pretty cool.

Why would they use that dump city?? I lived in Detroit a looong time ago... It hasn't changed. They should have stated in Chicago!

Let me give you an update on the city since you have been gone. It is still shitty and dangerous but now it is also a haven for hipsters that are trying to convince other people it is "actually not that bad".

So is Detroit filling in for Gotham...or Gotham and Metropolis? If it's just Gotham...perhaps it makes sense for Batman to have an issue with Supess. After his part in the destruction of Metropolis...who'd want him there...but I guess the Bats won't want him in Gotham either. Yes, that's cynicism in my post. As for "is undoubtedly rushing to finish the script in time", is that Joblo's opinion or what's happening - if the latter...further proof, if required, that WB's are making this up as

I just don't get the Man of Steel hate, it was much better than Iron Man 3 which I thought was hugely disappointing. While it wasn't as good as Iron Man 1, The Avengers, or the Dark Knight Trilogy it was still a solid movie especially since it was an origin story.

So is Metropolis still in ruins for this sequel? Why else would they be using Detroit? Perhaps Supes is constantly reminded of his recklessness by being forced to live in a dirty ruined city. Also Goyer RUSHING to finish the script is not a good sign at all. He had all the time in the world to make his script for MoS tight but he failed miserably at that. This sequel may only get worse

Well...

Considering that most of the climactic act of MoS was from JJ Abrahms flyby superman script. I would not be surprised if this script was the template. Considering the turn around to put this flick into production and then get it out by 2015, an original script this will not be. It will make it's money, but over all be a lousy film just like MoS was.

So

Great, so they won't have to use CGI when leveling the city.
