Strike Back below!
by: Paul Tassi Dec. 14, 2009

I've been a fan of the LIFE photo archives for a while now, as they have some of the best pictures of the most iconic moments in history, but this new batch of photos is one of the cooler things I've seen on the site.

Back when Connery left the James Bond franchise, the studio was on the hunt for a new 007 to fill his shoes. These photos are of the casting process for ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, and it shows the "tryouts," so to speak, as to who would ultimately be the next Bond. In this case, it was Lazenby, but only briefly.

Check out some of the photos below, and definitely click on them to head over to LIFE for the whole gallery.

Extra Tidbit: I grew up with Brosnan as Bond. GOLDENEYE is my favorite in the franchise.

Lazenby doesn't look the alleged 28 years old in his photos.

OK now Timothy Daulton was a great choice for bond he was just in the wrong bond movies. He reminds me of Daniel Craig..you know the badass bond.

There is only one true Bond...
Come on guys, Connery IS James Bond. Daniel Craig is doing a fine job, and Brosnan was okay. At least noone is trying to defend Timothy Daulton...

I will too. Timothy Dalton was the Daniel Craig of that time. Unfortunately, audience didn't accept the drastic change of outlook unlike today. Those movies are far grittier than Moore's comic fares and pretty similar to Casino Royale & Quantum of Solace according to taste. He's my favorite Bond next to Connery (tying with Craig).

I will. Dalton is the best to play Bond according to Ian Fleming's vision and Living Daylights is a fine example of a near perfect Bond film, from story to John Barry's best score out of all the movies.

Goldeneye was my old favorite. Now I prefer Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace because serious Bond is the best.

Judging the crop shown above vying for the role of 007-I say they made the right choice in Lazenby for the 1969 released film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service". Lazenby IMO should have been given another shot in the 1971 released film "Diamonds Are Forever" I thought he had the looks, height & Lazenby's acting chops were not all that bad.. (remember Connery in his first few Bonds). George...

Lazenby
They made the right choice going with Lazenby. None of them looked the part. Richardson might have been ok, but the hair was all wrong.

i grew up with brosnan as bond, and i've only seen 1 out of the 41,259 bond movies. it was one with halle berry in it or something...some dude had diamonds on his face too. i don't really remember or care. in fact, i really don't care about this franchise.

I'm 21 and I grew up with Brosnan as Bond too, but realise with time that he was really awful as Bond. Goldeneye was one of my favorite until I saw Majesty Secret Service, Dr. No and Golden Gun.

I think Brosnan was a fine Bond, but the scripts he had to work with were uninspired at best and absolute crap at worst. Brosnan could've been a great Bond, but the material did him no justice. I also think that memories of him have been tarnished because, in many people's eyes, he has been greatly over shadowed by Daniel Craig.
