Bryan Singer defends Apocalypse's costume plus new X-Men pictures

07.30.2015

Earlier this month, the look of Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse was revealed via Entertainment Weekly, and if you thought it looked pretty horrendous, you were not alone. Inevitable comparisons were made to the Power Rangers and it looks as though word as reached the director's ears. Bryan Singer recently spoke with ScreenCrush about the look of the costume and how it compares to the comics.

Bryan Singer on Apocalypse's costume:

He'll be very similar to images in the comic. There's obviously something very futuristic and yet ancient to the design of both his costume and his physicality.

Frankly, it seems like he's skirting the issue. Whether or not it looks like the one from the comics is irrelevant, in my opinion. What does matter is if he'll end up being a villain we can take seriously. Judging from the pictures, I'm guessing not. Speaking of, some new pictures have hit from the upcoming X-MEN: APOCALYPSE and while a few look similar to what we've seen, they are high-res and offer a good look at Jennifer Lawrence rocking that 1980's style! Loving it!

X-MEN: APOCALYPSE will open on May 27, 2016.

approaching 'Acceptance'

he still looks horrible, but I'm slowly coming to terms with it, but I will NOT come to terms with the garish overly-80's styling. It's like the costume designer went to an 80's party at a frat and took the designs from the minds of kids born in the 90's

You are aware that it is set in the 80s, right? Like, they look 80s because they are living in the 80s ...

It doesn't look like the comics, what crack is he smoking.

When dealing with comic book characters, especially in the X-Men franchise where there are 100's of superheroes, the style and costume of the character is just as crucial to their identity as their powers.

I'll be the first to admit that the costume doesn't look that great from what we've seen so far but you can't decide if you can take a villain seriously solely based on that. Especially coming from a director that, as far as this particular franchise is concerned, is batting for 1.000.

I think the Apocalypse costume looks fine... but he doesn't look like the comics. Maybe Singer looked at a picture of Thanos by mistake.

Considering Apocalypse can change size and appearance, I highly doubt (based off one photo) this will be the only appearance (image wise) we see of him in the film. I haven't doubted Singer yet, so why would I start at this point??

People always complain about the costumes in X-Men, but Singer has always delivered a good film with good performances. That's what really matters. You think fanboys would realize that by now, but I guess not.

People want the iconic grey look with clear eyes... why would you divert from especially that.

Here's a thought...

How about you wait until the movie comes out before passing judgment?

Sounds like he's evading the issue. "He will look like someone at some point in time."

Also, I find it weird that Mystique would be camouflaging as a human. I feel like it goes against her character's philosophy of not having to hide. You could make a safety argument if it was in public but they're in the mansion...

Yea, but it's easier to market the film if they have images of Jennifer Lawrence on screen. Not images of Jennifer Lawrence in blue body paint.

It's basically the same thing as why in every Marvel movie, the heroes always end up fighting without their masks on - Cap always has it off during the final fight, same with Iron Man, and Thor never has his helmet on. It's so the audience can see their faces, b/c the studios think THAT is the reason we're going to see these movies.

All I see whenever I am looking at a picture of this version of Apocalypse is the terrible Dijn from Wishmaster. Pretty laughable but maybe it was done to look retro on purpose...
