Con Air director Simon West will handle The Expendables 2

06.15.2011

If Simon West learned anything from making CON AIR, it was how to assemble and direct a whole bunch of dudes punching and shooting each other.

He'll put that experience to use on THE EXPENDABLES 2, virtually guaranteeing more sweaty characters running in slo-mo from billowing fireballs.

Sylvester Stallone directed the original movie, but ultimately decided to just participate in the mayhem in front of the camera instead of behind it on the sequel. West recently directed Sly's mercenary teammate Jason Statham in the remake of THE MECHANIC.

Most of the (surviving) cast from the first fight-filled flick will be back, along with a few additional familiar faces to be kicked and burned and knifed. The movie is expected in theaters August 17, 2012.

The SPOILER! synopsis: "The Expendables are back and this time it's personal! After Tool (Mickey Rourke), the heart and soul of the Expendables, is brutally murdered on a mission, his comrades swear to avenge him. They're not the only ones who want blood. Tool’s beautiful young and wild daughter Fiona embarks on her own revenge mission, complicating matters when she is captured and ransomed by a ruthless dictator plotting to destroy a resistance movement. Now Barney and the Expendables must risk everything to save her and humanity."

Extra Tidbit: Too bad Stallone didn't get his HEADSHOT (aka BULLET TO THE HEAD) director Walter Hill instead -- now that would be a seriously manly movie. Maybe I'll go watch EXTREME PREJUDICE instead.

Con Air > All Michael Bay Movies minus The Rock.

The one thing Sly as director brought to Expendables and Rambo though was the mayhem. Snapped necks, severed limbs, and blood by the gallon. Hope West is up to snuff on that front.

The first half of the synopsis is fine.

The second half about a the girl getting kidnapped and The Expendables having to take down an evil dictator however sounds a bit too familiar to the first.

Extreme Prejudice

Man, that was the mother of all macho flicks! Clancy Brown, Nick Nolte, Powers Boothe and Michael Ironside were the the mothereffin "Expendables" back then. Like "Wild Bunch" on Steroids!

Not a bad choice. I just hope it's as raw as the first one and not toned down at all. Con Air was a damn good movie, as was The General's Daughter.

this seems like a cool thing to me. I really enjoyed Con Air, but haven't seen The Mechanic yet. Arnie better make it back and as a full character not just a cameo. I'd love to see Van Damme in this too!!

why not

lets see what he's got!

besides, the pressure for the sequel really lies in the script and where it takes us. No I'm not saying we need or want something really deep or thought provoking, but it needs to raise the bar (is that possible) and at the same time be unique from the first.

VERY much looking forward to it!

I guess its a choice that makes sense. But since I didnt really care for the first film, they could have hired Rob Cohen and it still wouldnt have bothered me.

The Mechanic, though flawed, isn't that bad. It's still an enjoyable action film. Hope West can pull Expendables 2 off.

Hmmm.

I enjoyed Con Air but I hope he makes this one as good as that was.
Danielle Harris for Fiona.

That's cool....

For those who have seen the making of documentary for EXPENDABLES, this movie was hell for Stallone to direct and star in. CON AIR is a great flick and Simon's more than capable of handling this group.
Besides, you know Stallone will be giving as much advice and focus as he can to Simon as the shoot progresses.

Make Rambo 5 instead!!!

Con Air sucked so bad I was mad at myself for going to the theater to see it, and The Expendables was mediocre at best. Stallone should forget about this and make Rambo 5. Rambo 4 was a true game changer in the Rambo franchise, and deserves a sequel. I really liked the idea of Rambo taking on the Mexican drug cartel in Arizona.

Are you serious that you didn't like Con Air? I guess your entitled to your opinion, but dang. You must have a weird taste in action flicks if you didn't enjoy it!

Con Air was HORRIBLE, and my taste in action movies is Die Hard, Man on Fire, The Matrix, Rambo, Taken, the first Transporter film, and most any other action film with decent acting, good fight scenes, and semi-realistic plot. Con Air had Nic Cage (ugh) and a stupid plot (I know from experience that people don't get put in jail for defending themselves), and the absolute WORST hillbilly accent ever put on film. Anyone who lists this as among their favorites is not a fan of good movies.
