Cool title sequences

04.16.2008
Sometimes a movie's opening credits and title sequence are purely functional: name of movie, actors and filmmakers, done. Other times (as with the Bond series) it takes on a life of its own and becomes a small work of art.

The aptly named site ART OF THE TITLE collects many of these particularly impressive intro segments, including such excellent specimens as FIGHT CLUB, CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, THE SHINING, SAHARA, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, DELICATESSEN, SEVEN, THE KINGDOM and U TURN.

The site isn't quite comprehensive -- among the notable omissions is the single-take tracking shot that opens THE PLAYER -- but it's a nifty group (which gets extra credit for including the supergoofy UK series GARTH MARENGHI'S DARKPLACE). Some of my own faves:

Extra Tidbit: Some famous movies with no opening credits: UNFORGIVEN, THE MATRIX, OCEAN'S 11, GHOSTBUSTERS, ROBOCOP, CITIZEN KANE and LORD OF THE RINGS.

Gangs of New York...

... didn't have any opening credits, and that confused me initially. But then again, everything about that film was confusing.

Panic Room is on the list!!! And yes it is really awesome, another one that i would recommend is North by Northwest, and yet of my all time favorite is no other than A Series of Unfortunate Events. It was a mindblowing experiance.

really mang, how can you forget star wars? most important one! george lucas left the DGA to be sure there were no credits before the opening crawl in empire, this also prevented him from having spielberg direct return.

Additions

I liked those selections, but I have one addition off the top of my head.

I really enjoyed the opening credits to 'Panic Room'. I think they were very cleverly done. Do you notice the Fincher theme of awesome opening credits? I'm a fan.

Also, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is absolutely brilliant. I just discovered the show about a month ago on Adult Swim.

Darkplace needs more recognition in the states as one of the funniest comedies the UK have to offer. That intro is just a sample of it's genius.

What!!!!

I don't see Serenity yet , come on of the best theme's in a while then the Serenity logo then it zoom outs reveiling the sign on the side of the ship, then a quick zoom around, bursting through the atmosphere, quicky 1 liners between capt & driver then a continuous 5 minute scene with no editing or stopping, even if people don't like the film thats still f*cking awesome.

Nice to se Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on there

Hmn. Since they include TV shows, I'm really surprised that these aren't on the list:

'Doctor Who' (specifically, the iconic '74-'79 titles).

'The Prisoner'.

'Twin Peaks'.

Oh, and 'Cheers' too.

But I'm glad that the '80s 'Twilight Zone' was there...it's still a wonderfully disquieting sequence, even if the show overall couldn't hold a candle to the original (and, %$#@, the '80s 'Zone' has the worst quality DVDs I've ever seen or heard...just appalling).

But, 'Lost'? Really?

Good list. However, "Lord of War" shoulda been up there, as well as "Terminator 2".
