Cool Videos: Before Bryan Cranston was Breaking Bad - A Career Retrospective

09.30.2013

It's hard to imagine movie stars before they were movie stars, expecially after they're movie stars (you get all that?). Such is the case with Bryan Cranston, who just wrapped up his turn as Walter White/Heisenberg on AMC's Breaking Bad, solidifying his likeness, mannerisms, and actions in the halls of pop culture forever. Cranston delivered one of the most ferociously intense, emotional, and marvelous performances ever filmed. At this point, Cranston has reached a status that you couldn't consider him anything less than a phenomenal actor. But, was it always that way?

We've heard of Cranston's commercial work, which isn't all that surprising for up-and-coming actors, but apparently Cranston has been "in the trenches" for a lot longer than you may think, reaching all the way back to shows like Airwolf, Baywach, The Flash, Matlock, Murder: She Wrote, Babylon 5, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, The X-Files, Chicago Hope, 3rd Rock From The Sun, The King of Queens, and 30 Rock. That's a hell of a lot of small appearances that led to the one that became his career maker. It's really cool to see just how long Cranston's been at it, which makes it even more awesome when you consider what he just pulled off with Breaking Bad.

Say my name:

Cranston will next be seen in GODZILLA on May 16, 2014 (and my fingers are still crossed for Lex Luthor!)

www.WOW!

I loved this video. Fun! He's got such a great comedic touch. A very talented man I'd watch him in anything. While I prefer the older, a bit weathered Bryan Cranston, I do have to admit he gives Tom Selleck some strong competition for nice legs in short shorts. ;)

X-Files

The first time I really appreciated Cranston as an actor was the time he was in that X-Files episode. He played a guy who had to keep driving at a certain speed or else his head would explode after being exposed to a military experiment. He took Mulder hostage during his drive. He was quite sympathetic in that role from what i can remember despite doing some not so great things. I didn't know Gilligan worked on that episode. That explains alot. Cranston will never get a characer as rich as

Cranston will never get a characer as rich as Walter White (but come on, how often does a character that good come along for any actor?) but I'm sure this role will continue to ensure that he has a good career in film (and TV, if he choses) for years to come.

always loved him in...

Malcolm in the Middle, he brought such an endearing quality to the father role, he was very much a human Homer Simpson in that show and I never forgot him bc of that, which is why its still hard for me to wrap my mid around the fact that he is Walter White, he played one of the kindest and then cruelest characters on TV, now that's what you call an actor.

They totally missed my favourite from Seinfeld as Tim Whatley.

"I believe he converted to Judaism simply for the jokes"

Cranston kept at it. He played nothing but small meaningless roles for decades before becoming a generational icon. You have to respect that. He has certainly became one of my favorite actors.

Extra Tidbit: I really hope he doesn't do Lex Luthor. He is too good of an actor to be caught up in that shit storm.

X-Files

Cranston is the man! I really want to watch the entire X-Files episode he is in some day. As someone mentioned, that's what got him the part for Walter White.

Also, Waterworld is not bad. People only remember that it was the most expensive movie ever made at its time and it didn't make back its insane budget. I still have it on VHS if anyone would like to borrow it.

I remember when Braking Bad first aired any everyone said how hard it was to not see his character from Malcolm in the Middle. Now it is hard for everyone to not see Walter White. That right there shows how good of an actor he is. He becomes his roles. Even in some of those cheese clips his skills as an actor are very apparent.

It was his performance in the episode of the X-files (written by Vince Gilligan) that got him the part of Walter White.

He would make an awesome Gordon Freeman from Half Life. I'd love to see him in a tense action/thriller like Ransom or The Fugitive.

If he went on TV again I'd like to see him butt heads with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards or play the president in the next season of 24.

No anti-dentite?

Even younger he had that "daddy awkwardness"
I don't know how to say it.

Need a video of his voice acting. A lot of his stuff is kind of hard to find, but he's done so much voice acting over his career, there really should be a video dedicated to that aspect of his career.

Power Rangers

i was hoping it would have some clips of him on Power Rangers, yeah he was just a voice (guy in the suit?) for that show, but i never watched Matlock, Murder She Wrote, or any of these shows when i was a kid.

apparently, the original Blue Ranger was named after him (Billy Cranston)

This guy is great

I think he is going to far and win an Oscar in the next 10-15 years. Actors like this make the win better because he started in commercials and worked his way up.

Missed Seinfeld in the article. Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn and Bob Odenkirk all appeared in it. Another reason why Seinfeld is great.
