Cool Videos: "Superman Classic", a hand-drawn animation short

02.07.2011

Still got a passion for traditional animation?

Fortunately you're not the only one. Disney animator Rob Pratt (TARZAN, POCAHONTAS) put together his own little piece as a love letter to the old SUPERMAN serials, adding his own flair to the Man of Steel.

Pratt talks about his inspiration and shows a look behind the scenes (and a surprise voice actor) after the very cool short. Dig it.

If you see a cool video online you think would be perfect for this spotlight, drop us a line at yourvideos@joblo.com.

That was good, but...

I found a mistake. When Superman lifts up the robot's foot, the telephone booth disappears in the background.

Actually, Clark goes into the phone booth, the robot's foot comes down on the booth (smashing it, and presumably Clark), and then Superman is lifting the robot's foot up off the now destroyed phone booth.

Nope. Superman vs. the robots from the classic Fletcher Superman cartoons from the 1940's.

I am a comic book and superhero fan, but superman has never appealed to me and this didn't either. Maybe Snyder can change my mind.

Why, Oh Why...

Aren't we getting this from Warner Brothers/DC Comics instead of a new "hipster doofus" Superman movie (forgive me Cosmo)?

This is such a breath of fresh air and such a nod to all that has gone on before. Pure action, pure animation, pure nostalgia, pure fun and pure SUPERMAN!

I'd love more please. More Superman, even Batman or any of the DC pantheon of characters. This would be smashing with the DC characters of the 1940s too (JSA anyone).

Thanks for that Rob. It has made my night.

God I love hand-drawn animation. I used to think that's what I wanted to do. Much as I enjoy what they can do with computers, nothing quite compares. Same goes for claymation.
