Daniel Craig promises Skyfall won't be awful like Quantum

Dec. 12, 2011by: Paul Tassi

It's always refreshing to hear actors talking open and honestly about their own work, which is why I found this interview with Daniel Craig so interesting. Speaking with Time Out, he acknowledges the failures of QUANTUM OF SOLACE while promising that SKYFALL will be a return to form.

"On Quantum, we were fucked. We had the bare bones of a script and then there was the strike and there was nothing we could do. We couldn't employ a writer to finish it. You swear you'll never get involved with shit like that, and then it happens."

Craig even had to write a bit himself with director Mark Foster. "And a writer I am not..."

"[Quantum] was never meant to be as much of a sequel as it was; it just ended up being one, starting where the last one finished. For me personally, on a level of feeling satisfied, I would want to do better next time. That’s really important to me."

But why will SKYFALL be better?

"I really think this one is better even than Casino Royale", Craig enthuses. "[Director] Sam Mendes has lived with Bond all his life, and he grew up with Bond in the same way I did. We have exactly the same reference points, we both like the same Bond movies, and we both like the same bits in the same Bond movies we like. We sat down and we just rabbited for hours about Live And Let Die or From Russia With Love, and talked about little scenes that we knew from them. That’s how we started talking about it. That’s what we tried to instill in the script. He’s been working his arse off to tie all these things together so they make sense... in a Bond way!"

Honestly, I believe him on both points. The writer's strike messed up a lot of stuff, and I can only imagine Daniel Craig sitting around trying to write his own dialogue for QUANTUM. And Mendes is a more than capable director, and if he's got true passion for the material, SKYFALL should go quite well.

Extra Tidbit: I didn't think QUANTUM was the travesty it's alleged to be, but damn, did that plot not make much sense.

Quantum

The burning building escape scene was ludicrous - even for a bond film. Skyfall should be good though!

I think Quantum of Solace gets a unfairly bagged on. While not as good as Casino Royale , I can name several Bond movies that I feel are not as good as Quantum : every Brosnan Bond except Goldeneye , A View to a Kill , Diamonds Are Forever , The Man With The Golden Gun , and You Only Live Twice. People say that Quantum was too much like a Bourne movie , well there were parts of Casino Royale that were Bourne like also. It is a good sequel , Craig gives a good performance and it is never boring.

I'm pumped for another Bond movie but I still dislike Mendes for this. He's not an action director! Prepare to see James Bond sitting by a lake watching rose petals float by while he contemplates life and wonders if his wife still loves him and if he's too old for the young girl next door.

I enjoyed Quantum of Solace. It was nice epilogue to Casino Royale. It wasn't meant to be your average Bond film with cheeky one-liners and gadgets, this was about Bond facing a personal tragedy and getting it out of his system. For the most part, it succeeded. And the scene at the opera stands one of the classic moments in Bond history, IMO. Overall, I prefer grounded and gritty Bond over the cartoony CGI-shitfest that was Die Another Day.

C'mon, quit hating on Quantum.

OK I agree, as a standalone movie Quantum is a bit iffy. But watching Casino Royale and Quantum back-to-back is so fucking epic and really shows how the two should have been one movie. Hell, they could have pulled the Harry Potter and Twilight card and called them 007 Part 1: Casino Royale and 007 Part 2: Quantum of Solace. If that were the case then I am sure people wouldn't be bitching so much.

I never thought Quantum was bad. In fact, I thought it made Casino Royale better as a one-two punch that complemented one another quite well. It was like how Dark Knight made Batman Begins better.

FINALLY!

As a huge Bond fan I'm very happy that somebody besides me is speaking out about how awful this movie was....I've been saying since Quantum came out that it was one of the worst Bond movies ever made (up there with On Her Majesty's Secret Service...yeap, that bad) and everyone would defend it like it was Goldfinger or something?...Looking forward to Skyfall though, should be one of Bonds best

It displayed his darkness.

I have never heard anyone say Quantum was bad. Some people wanted some other things added or taken away but all and all I thought it was BAD ASS!. People don't realized it showed Bond striped down to his core. Giving you the first time what Bond can be become when he is pushed to the limit. That is something we will not see again and that is why I feel it was better than the first. Now if he is going back to form in the new one, that is cool but we'll always keep in the back of our heads, the

Huh?

"Quantum of Solace" was terrible? It's funny that this is the FIRST time I'm reading this. While people have expressed their complaints, I've never seen anyone say it was outright bad. I guess it's typical to throw a sequel under the bus when a new, "better" one is on the horizon. In three years I'll be commenting the same thing about "Skyfall".

On the spectrum of Bond movies, Quantum was on the low end, but not the worst. I have to disagree about the "sequel" angle Craig talks about. I liked the idea of making Quantum the new Spectre, in a sense. Like a throwback to the older Bond films. I wish they were continuing with that idea.

Well...

I wouldn't call Quantum outright awful, but it was very disappointing. My main issue was with the terribly shot, god-awful, headache inducing, can't-see-shit action scenes. Talk about shoddy! But Olga Kurylenko is also one of the best, sexiest Bond girls ever, and it was "decently" entertaining I suppose. Storyline sucks though (oh no! 75% of Bolivia's water may be sold at a premium! SEND JAMES BOND NOW) Here's to hoping Skyfall is a return to form.

This is why you don't attempt making a movie without writers. Why throw 100 million dollars at the wall and hope it sticks.

I might be the only person who likes QoS. I recently rewatched it, finding myself having appreciated it more than I did when I saw it in theaters.. Considering the amount of actual shit hollywood produces- Qos fine with me. I just think we expected so much from it. Gadgets, tech advanced cars, etc.

I didn't expect any of those things, I just expected good direction, cinematography & editing - something that's usually a given for a Bond movie.

craig seems like a cool guy...like not super pretentious, or some kind of excuse maker...he seems like the type of guy you could grab a beer with and forget he's famous in about 3 seconds and talk to about normal shit that happens in life everyday, not like la-la land bullshit.

Quantum is the only Bond film that I just can't enjoy on any level whatsoever. It was so bad that I didn't think that I'd ever want to see another Bond film any time soon. But then throw the name Sam Mendes into the mix and I'm all excited about Bond again. Can't wait to see this.

I am glad he admitted to it My buddies in town enjoyed Quantum because they said action is all that matters. They don't know shit. That movie was fucking terrible in both ways. But I am glad that Sam Mendes is coming to be the director for this. He's a major one.

A Lost Opportunity

What most upsets be about Quantum was its wasted potential on the title song. Amy Winehouse should have been the one to record the song - and would have added so much power to the lyrics - alas, Jack White and Alicia Keys got the part setting a certain tone for the film and now Winehouse is no longer alive to have her second chance. I by no means imply her death should have been foreseen and therefore given to her it is just a sad circumstance that one of the most dynamic modern British singers

I like "Quantum of Solace", but the film does have its problems, and it could've and should've been better than it was. The writer's strike forced Paul Haggis to rush the script, and it really hurt the finished product. I do have faith that "Skyfall" will be better, especially with Craig saying it will be better than "Casino Royale". CR is my favorite Bond film, so that is no small statement.

So basically, now that we are allowed to say Quantum sucked, everyone comes out of the closet to express their little love for the flick. That's kind of funny. But hey, I kind of enjoyed it as well. Like everyone else, I didn't like it as much as Casino Royale, but still not THAT bad.

Paul I used to agree with you...I used to like to hear actors talking open and honestly about their own work...but now I feel like it's way over done!! I feel like all actors, directors, and movie studio's crap on their own movies. Enough is enough. These movies are screen waaaaay before they are released to the public. If they are crap, fix them!! Stop releasing crap and taking our money, cause that's just not right!!
That being said, I like Quantum...enough, I didn't hate it but it

i actually enjoyed Quantum Of Solace very much, and although i recognize that it wasnt spot on like Casino Royale was, it was still a good Bond Movie.
now, the best part of this all is, if Daniel Craig himself admited that QOS was not good but this time around Skyfall will be even better than CR, in that case i am over the top excited about this movie.

I do enjoy QUANTUM but as a maniacal Bond fan I was disappointed in the overall story and film. Plus Forster tried to make it "artsy" at times and that was killing me. For me though the number one thing I grew tired of was Bond being a rogue agent cause he's not Jason Bourne. Compared to CASINO ROYALE, QUANTUM was a skid mark.
I'm happy to see Bond getting back to his roots and that's quite a statement saying it could be better than CASINO ROYALE as I consider that to be masterful.

Tidbit - I agree with you. I didn't think it was terrible.
I feel like most people were comparing it to Casino Royale while I suppose I was comparing it to the Bond's of my childhood which was the Brosnan era - and some of those were just awful. So by comparison I liked it just fine. I guess I am in the minority though.
