Danny Boyle talks about returning to direct a 28 Days Later sequel

Earlier this year, writer Alex Garland (EX MACHINA) revealed that he had been speaking with Danny Boyle and producer Andrew MacDonald about a concept he had for 28 MONTHS LATER, or whatever the next sequel in the 28 DAYS line will be called. While Garland isn't on-board to write the script at this time, Danny Boyle did express interest in being involved with the sequel, even saying that he'd be open to direct!

Danny Boyle on directing 28 MONTHS LATER:

I've got no problem [with that]. It’s the usual thing: is it's not about whether people think it's a good idea that you're directing. It’s whether you respond to the script or not. It’s just like on [STEVE JOBS]. I got the script and I went, 'That was amazing. I hope I can add to that somehow and it be even better than just the experience of reading it.'

[28 MONTHS LATER is] not quite ready to go, but, there's been a bit of work done on that. It's in a process at the moment and I wouldn't have any inhibition about being involved in it at all. It's amazing what has happened to the zombie genre since we made it. There’s Walking Dead. I saw this very funny trailer the other day for the SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. A very funny trailer. It appears to be everywhere.

While I doubt that Boyle would step behind the camera for this, I do like the fact that he's invested enough in the concept to consider it. 28 WEEKS LATER fared better than most horror movie sequels and the fact they're taking their time with MONTHS seems to bode well. All I ask is that they continue to push the story and do something different than what we've already seen.

Danny Boyle's next film, STEVE JOBS, opens in theaters on October 23, 2015.
