Elizabeth Olsen on her realistic Scarlet Witch costume in Avengers 2

02.12.2014

Elizabeth Olsen will be playing Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon's THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, but she will be the first to tell you that she is not the buxom, skin-baring type of actress you would expect for a comic book movie. She doesn't have the same, um, assets as a Scarlett Johannson but that shouldn't detract from her ability to play the character on screen.

But, one question that it does raise, is how will she look wearing Scarlet Witch's iconic costume from the pages of Marvel Comics? The outfit is very revealing and the type of thing many fanboys have been waiting to see on the big screen. With production underway for the sequel, Olsen told Comic Book Movie those fans should not hold their breath.

We’ve done some costume stuff, yeah! My favourite piece is my secrecy cloak that prevents anyone from seeing what I’m wearing. There’s a hood, and a robe – it protects the image! I don’t think Joss ever would have hired me, honestly, if he wanted me to wear those outfits; I am not a professional athlete and nor am I a model. Wearing those costumes wouldn’t be fun for anyone who wasn’t those things. He already had a different idea. It respects and involves the comic-book character but it’s different, more rooted. It’s for someone today. Well, if someone walked around wearing what she wore in the comics, people would stop and say, ‘What the hell… she thinks she’s a superhero!

I kind of had a feeling this was coming. Olsen is a beautiful woman, no doubt about it, but I kind of doubted she would be outfitted the same as her illustrated counterpart. We are still not entirely sure how her introduction will be made in the film, but I would think she and her brother Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) will wear attire that evokes the color scheme and design of their comic book origin while seeming more attuned to the live action film setting. Hopefully this doesn't mean an uninspired design like a red leather jacket.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON opens May 1, 2015.

No disrespect to Ms. Olsen, but I was one hoping for a sexy version of Scarlet Witch. I don't know much about her as an actress though I hear her spoken of very highly, but I was hoping for an Eva Green type body to fill out that uniform. It's prurient, to be sure, but I gotta be honest.

She'll probably be in a red jump suit and Quicksilver will be in a silver jump suit. Just like another film......

In all seriousness though. I don't mind, everyone had a huge problem when they lifted Captain America's exact costume from the comics to big screen. I have rarely heard anyone say it was good. So hopefully they do something cool with it, but no big loss if if doesn't look EXACTLY like the comics version.

I'll start this off with the usual disclaimer about how I was a comic book fan...like this gives me some air of authority to the subject matter. Then I'll say...I'm not the least bit concerned if a movie studio...be they Marvel, WB's, Fox or Sony take the grounded in reality route with costumes. The deleted Wolverine scene showing his traditional costume in what looked like a darker tone of colour was very cool - but would he really look threatening in the bright yellow from the comics? Going

Going by the costumes female superheroes are given in the comic...one would think their power was to make the villain drool...lose focus and allow the opportunity to sucker punch the super perv to oblivion. Sure, they look hot as hell - but a little bit of practicality for the live action stuff is more than welcomed. It's funny that I never really had an issue with Affleck's Daredevil costume (bear in mind, I wasn't a Daredevil fan) but didn't like Magneto's traditional comic book look in the closing moments of First Class nor Cap's goofy looking suit (well helmet, really) in the Avengers movie. The look in the latest installment... as with the first one was awesome.

She's got the assets for the costume

After seeing her naked in Oldboy I'd say she has PLENTY of the assets she needs to rock the original costume. Too bad. I'm sure she'll look cool though

That secrecy cloak will be the #1 Halloween costume of 2015. It'll be cheap to do, too.

As long as they use the traditional costume in the Avengers 2 XXX Parody I'm okay with this.

She's a terrific, beaitiful actress and will no doubt own the role. I'm a little dissapointed that there taking a more realistic approach towards her costume, but in the end it makes sense.

Can't wait to see ANYTHING from this film.

Maybe not the helmet but a scarlet cloak would work.

what about Avengers 1?

it was Whedon who did the generally least-liked Captain America costume so far. but then again, it was a pretty direct translation of the comic book. and they were self-aware that it's cheesy (er... "old-fashioned"). so i dont know.

Marvel makes costumes more realistic = "Makes sense, good decision!"
Any other studio makes costumes more realistic = "Boo you suck, give the rights back to Marvel!!!!"

My guess is she could wear a giant banana costume, and Whedon/ Marvel studio fanboys would praise them for finally getting the costume right.

Right. That's called "trust." Marvel and Whedon have given us a reason to trust them.

Ever since Martha Marcy May Marlene, I have been a fan of hers. Can't wait to see her as the Scarlet Witch. This movie cannot get here quick enough.

Good call. Marvel has been great at bringing their characters to the silver screen and grounding them in ways so as to not look preposterous. My hats off to them.
