Elizabeth Olsen on her realistic Scarlet Witch costume in Avengers 2

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Elizabeth Olsen will be playing Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon‘s THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, but she will be the first to tell you that she is not the buxom, skin-baring type of actress you would expect for a comic book movie. She doesn’t have the same, um, assets as a Scarlett Johannson but that shouldn’t detract from her ability to play the character on screen.

But, one question that it does raise, is how will she look wearing Scarlet Witch’s iconic costume from the pages of Marvel Comics? The outfit is very revealing and the type of thing many fanboys have been waiting to see on the big screen. With production underway for the sequel, Olsen told Comic Book Movie those fans should not hold their breath.

We’ve done some costume stuff, yeah! My favourite piece is my secrecy cloak that prevents anyone from seeing what I’m wearing. There’s a hood, and a robe – it protects the image! I don’t think Joss ever would have hired me, honestly, if he wanted me to wear those outfits; I am not a professional athlete and nor am I a model. Wearing those costumes wouldn’t be fun for anyone who wasn’t those things. He already had a different idea. It respects and involves the comic-book character but it’s different, more rooted. It’s for someone today. Well, if someone walked around wearing what she wore in the comics, people would stop and say, ‘What the hell… she thinks she’s a superhero!

I kind of had a feeling this was coming. Olsen is a beautiful woman, no doubt about it, but I kind of doubted she would be outfitted the same as her illustrated counterpart. We are still not entirely sure how her introduction will be made in the film, but I would think she and her brother Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) will wear attire that evokes the color scheme and design of their comic book origin while seeming more attuned to the live action film setting. Hopefully this doesn’t mean an uninspired design like a red leather jacket.

THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON opens May 1, 2015.
