General Zod might look a little different in Batman V Superman

08.19.2015

Every now and then a piece of movie news emerges which just leaves you feeling utterly confused; I'm experiencing that right now, as will you soon enough. The following may contain spoilers for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE so be forewarned. Michael Shannon's General Zod met his end at the close of MAN OF STEEL but as we saw in the trailer for BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, he still has some part to play in the events to come.

Michael Shannon spoke with Vulture and shared a delightful little story about how he got trapped in a porta-potty on the set of BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE:

I was in my costume, and I couldn’t use my fingers because in the sequel I have flippers instead of hands, so I had these wax flippers on my fingers, and I couldn’t open the door, and I could hear Zack [Snyder, the director] being like, 'Where’s Shannon? Where the f--k is he?' and the whole crew was standing around. I was like, knocking on the door with my flippers, 'Let me out of here!'

Thankfully a craft-service guy took notice of the actors absence and was able to free Shannon from his-wait, did he say flippers? He definitely said flippers right? I'm not just imagining that? As to why Michael Shannon may have flippers on his hands in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, I couldn't even begin to explain that. General Zod's corpse was glimpsed in the BVS trailer, seemingly entering the the possession of Lex Luther (Jesse Eisenberg,) so I suppose his "flippers" could stem from an experiment Lex runs on the General. It's also entirely possible that Michael Shannon is just messing with us, so keep that in mind.

Millions upon millions of people have viewed the BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE trailer, but Michael Shannon is not one of him; in fact, he wasn't even aware that he had made an appearance in it, saying "well, I haven’t seen the trailer either, so I don’t know what I am in the trailer, I could be a toaster, or a Porsche, I don’t know.” Look for an answer to General Zod's "flippers" when BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.

God you guys are so negative I can't wait to see Michael Shannon's interpretation of the Penguin, after all this a Batman film isn't it. Rumour has it Russell Crowe is returning to play Catwoman

Yikes.

There are just no words. This just sounds really lame. I can see this being the biggest thing people take away from the movie. Wtf was up with those flippers?!

Bizarro

I kind of assumed with his body in Luthor's possession they were going to go with more of a New52 version of Bizarro.

Slow day on the superhero news front. All it means is that Michael Shannon is doing work as Doomsday in a motion capture suit.

I just really hope this whole thing about him turning into Doomsday doesn't end up being true. It's way too soon for him to show up and it would undoubtably be too much stuff going on. Not to mention it's a dumb idea.

I couldn't disagree more. Doomsday is basically an evil Hulk (minus the Bruce Banner baggage), so having an entire movie revolving around him would get boring (not to mention the body count would make it an R-rated film). So you take a movie where Superman is a divisive figure, Batman takes the figurative place of the people who distrust him, then you take a meddling Luthor accidentally creating a super-villain that can't be stopped, allowing Kal the chance to show the world they really can

It's a solid idea that may be the only one that could work (unless we're going to have yet another Luthor land-grabber film).

Yes, but honestly if thier going to do Doomsday right the fight should end with Supermans death. I agree it's way too little to sustain an entire film (possibly a finial act of a Justice League movie though). I wan't to see it, and the return of Superman with Steel and the Cyborg Superman (speaking of which anyone else hoping that space ship in the trailer is the Hank Henshaws was on), I just want to see it happen latter.

I don't think it should. Not at first at least. Doomsday is immortal and can survive in space, so he can be defeated without dying - and his introduction in Death of Superman was waaaay too rushed. They were basically like, "which character should kill Superman? Hmm...fuck it, let's just invent a random monster and just pretend he's been around for ages". Which was dumb. Doomsday should NOT be introduced in the same film he kills Superman, is what I'm saying.

I'm assuming he transitions from General Zod to Doomsday in this and/or that Doomsday will have Zod's DNA at least.

...uh...

Did you seriously write an article about a joke made by an actor and treat it as inside information? Seriously? You know, Marlon Brando wanted to make Jor-El a talking ham sandwich -- but that's not what he was in the movie. Shannon is taking the piss ... and somehow ... miraculously, people are falling for it...

I may be wrong but I thought Richard Donner was explaining that if Marlon Brando could convince him that he didn't need to be in the movie he would. Richard Donner explained that Marlon was a witty and clever guy and used the example of a Ham Sandwich. Not that Marlon wanted to be a Ham Sandwich.

How did he close and lock the door? Funny story but i`m guessing it`s one of those publicist says " How about you say this instead."

Somebody could have opened and closed the door for him from the outside, then left. Shannon didn't even say that he locked the door once he's inside.

Doomsday

He's Doomsday. The "flippers" are probably a portion of his motion capture suit.
