Google: The Movie. No seriously, a movie about Google.

08.20.2010

With THE SOCIAL NETWORK, the so-called "Facebook Movie," hitting theaters this October, producers in Hollywood are looking to other popular internet success stories to turn into movies. While you may have seen the parody trailers for Twitter and MySpace movies, it seems as though they're serious about making a GOOGLE movie.

Producer Michael London (SIDEWAYS) has optioned the rights to the book "Googled: The End of the World As We Know It," which tells the story of Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page. While SOCIAL NETWORK is a somewhat unflattering portrait of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, GOOGLED would be nicer to its subjects. One of Brin and Page's credos while starting the company was "You can make money without doing evil" and the movie will focus on how two "nice guys" made one of the most popular and successful companies in the world.

But can a flattering movie about two billionaires who are genuinely nice guys be interesting? THE SOCIAL NETWORK is fascinating because of all the backstabbing, sniping, fighting and nastiness that went into creating Facebook. Do you think you'd be interested in a movie about Google and its founders?

Extra Tidbit: Who would you cast as Sergey and Larry?

A friend of mine used to work for Google. He would tell me all the perks about his job there. Apparently, Google takes VERY good care of their employees.

Google is located just over the hill from my house along with Yahoo, McAfee, Hewlett Packard and a bunch of other 'familiar' internet/computer companies. They're all literally located right next door to each other.

NO. My interest in SN is pretty much zero (all I care about is the score by Trent Reznor) & this sounds like an even worse idea.

Wait for the twitter movie, sure it will come in some of kind of triple special edition DVD with this movie and the social network.. I hope someday someone make a documentary about how Hollywood ran out of ideas in the first decade of the 21th century.. Can you imagine this in ten years? The playstation movie? The Ipod movie? Resident Evil 7: Code Alice? .. The title is very accurate..The end of the world as we know it.

Middle Men beat both this and The Social Network to the punch yet it doesn't seem to be as successful? I mean c'mon, porn is so much more important to the internet than facebook or google is.

Aaarrrggghh! Who gives a shit?!?! Isn't it enough that there's already a movie about Facebook? (I can't even remember its title, because I just don't care, enough!) Before you know it, they'll start filming an Imovie! *sigh*

I should imagine most groundbreaking companies have a fairly compelling story behind their rise to success - I think it's down to whether these stories can be portrayed honestly. For example, a dramatisation about the rise of Microsoft would be pretty interesting, but would those involved allow a warts and all portrayal of events? There's a world of difference between Facebook being okay with this sort of thing and a major corporation being willing to go along with the creation of a film that

Google are an interesting company, and seem keen to portray themselves as 'the good guys' - whether that's going to make a worthwhile movie remains to be seen.

Hmmmm....

I wonder if the film would focus only on the beginnings of Google or would it go into their relationships with the NSA, CIA, and FBI and eventual moves to help destroy net neutrality with their Google/Verizon deal? Maybe they could do it a la Star Wars where Luke did indeed join the dark side.

For Sergey I'd cast Geoffrey Arend, and for Larry I'd cast David Alan Grier in whiteface.

I'm going to search the US Patent office for cool ideas, and then create movies about the inventors and how they created their invention.

Won't make money...

"The Social Network" won't make much money so I don't know what they're aiming for here. Nobody gives a fuck how Facebook started. I'll only see the movie cause of Fincher, that's it.

Oh please.......

Sounds like studios are on the bandwagon now for films on this subject material. Guess will just have to see how "The Social Network" fairs with audiences.

Ha! It's amusing to watch Hollywood pick-up anything and everything, even something like a damn search engine, for inspiration. What's next a movie about the dangerous realm of DVD cover creation? "One man must sacrifice everything to design the greatest DVD cover ever." Maybe a Photoshop movie? Or a thriller about Windows XP? "This Summer.. Alt + Ctrl + Del Your Existence." Or the best one yet...a movie about wireless routers. "Some connections...can never be seen."

Wow, a bunch of pretentious directors making movies about every fucking internet fad ever created. Can't wait. "The Social Network" barely looks passable.

I look forward to announcements about Alta Vista: The movie, Web Crawler: The Movie, 2 Girls 1 Cup: The Untold Story, and Did you Mean? The movie.

These two guys are currently tied as the 24th most richest person in the WORLD. Google is the worlds largest internet company. You're seriously going to call all that a fad?

Jesus Christ, why must they torture us with this? They had a bright idea, they tried it out, it worked, they made billions, end of story.
