Guillermo del Toro shooting a small, black & white film before Pacific Rim 2

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

The project King Guillermo Del Toro has once again delivered some fine details about another upcoming movie he hopes to make. Although this one does sound promising and has an actual timeline, so here’ hoping it’s the real thing. Collider caught up with the director who is in post-production on CRIMSON PEAK and returning to direct PACIFIC RIM 2 to discuss what’s on his current agenda. Del Toro dropped an interesting note about his plans for a very small black and white film that he wants to shoot before he dives into PACIFIC RIM sequel.

He told Collider about a scheduled hiatus from PR2 in which he will shoot this much smaller movie:

“Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”

And he already has a cast in mind:

“It’s a very small cast. I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film. That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”

When asked if this new film fits into his previous filmography, he teased:

“There’s one great creature in it.”

Guillermo Del Toro confirmed that the project does have a title, but didn’t want to share too much too soon. It would be very nice to see Hurt and Toro work together again; I have to say I still feel HELLBOY doesn’t get the admiration it deserves believe it or not. It’s refreshing to see a big director known for large-scale flicks take a step back and return to his small movie roots, in black and white no less. We will keep you posted on any and all details about this one and the other 32 projects he has going.
