Is it possible...will the Avengers battle the Skrulls?

May. 20, 2010by:

Now that Joss Whedon is the helmer for THE AVENGERS, it's about time for the rumors to start flooding through.

This rumor concerns who the main antagonists for THE AVENGERS will be. The buzz amongst the movie sites is that the Skrulls are the most likely candidate. To be more specific, the film is supposedly following the original storyline where Loki obtains control over the Hulk to unleash fury upon the Earth, which then causes THE AVENGERS to assemble for the first time.

For those who may not know too much about the Skrulls, here's a bit of info from Marvel:

"The Skrulls are an extraterrestrial humanoid race who have created a vast interstellar empire, the oldest known empire still in existence, within the Andromeda Galaxy.. A Skrull can mentally cause the unstable molecules that comprise his or her body to become pliant, enabling him or her to assume other forms through muscular expansion and contraction. Once a new shape has been assumed (human, animal, alien), it takes a conscious act of will to assume another form or revert to natural.. Although the Skrulls became aware of Earth (due to its nearness to a natural warp-space access point) eons ago, it was not until recent times that they considered Earths threat. Their first regular surveillances of Earth began in the 1930s. To date most of the Skrulls excursions to Earth have been extremely small-scale, with no more than a handful of soldier-infiltrators being dispatched at any given time. It is not yet known how the death of the current ruling family will affect official policy toward Earth or the government of the empire in general."

More than one inside source is giving ComicBookMovie.com the scoop that the Skrulls will brainwash and use the Hulk like in the original comics. However, the Skrulls won't come in masses. Expect a full on alien invasion in the sequel. Don't fret, another alien race will join in on the fun. The Kree, enemies of the Skrulls will have a part in the film. This wasn't surprising news since newbie actor Kevin Pennington is being considered for the role of Noh-Varr, who is a Kree.

I often wondered when the Skrulls would come into play. Hopefully the sources are correct and they do somewhat go by the original comic storyline. It would be very cool to see the Skrulls and the Kree on the big screen.

Extra Tidbit: When reading "The Runaways", I was a little surprised about Xavin's little secret. Although, I really shouldn't have been.

Yes! Hell's yes! Bring the Skrulls in, make them a minor threat, then explore them more in the sequels. This will be great!

Well... okay...

The Kree / Skrull war was THE Avengers storyline from the sixties. The Korvac Saga was THE storyline from the seventies. I can see maybe them making three Avengers movies. Some of the Avengers storylines from the past twenty years are not worth doing.

Hammer, Skull, Leader, Abomination, and Loki? That reminds of the Batman movie they did back in the sixties.

The Avengers movie should be about a group of people who are all that stands between Earth and a ridiculously horrible fate. You know that bit at the end of Ghostbusters where everything looks like it's screwed, but then the Ghostbusters show up and the crowd goes mental? That's how the Avengers movie should feel right there. A Skrull invasion could work, but they have to be made into utterly terrifying beings who humanity seem to be powerless against, like in the Ultimates.

As great as Joss Whedon, this is starting to get fishy...

I mean iron man, thor and the hulk in one movie sounds like a lot of characters to juggle but introducing two alien races colours me a skeptic. And i was getting so used to thinking this was going to work out on hearing Whedon joining...

ALiens jsut about fit into this new universe...b tu i'm sitll not sure about Gods and demi-gods...

This looks like it's definitely goign to be one for comic fans.

How will they keep the "real world" feeling they want in the Marvel Studios films, with an alien invasion... Now THAT is a question!
extra tidbit : And don't forget Hulkling in Young Avengers who's a Skrull/Kree hybrid...

I like it

I think an extra-terrestrial threat is a perfectly good reason to bring together the Avengers.

S.H.I.E.L.D. could have been aware of the coming threat of the Skrulls for decades, but only recently have they seen that threat materialize, and they decide the best thing to do is put together a superhero team. (Of course, you have to ask "why wouldn't they go to the Fantastic Four or the X-Men first?)

Still, I like it.

Sounds like the story in the two animated Ultimate Avengers movies. Pretty much exactly.

Didn't know those aliens were called Scrulls though, but must be the same ones, shape-shifters and all. Perhaps the Captain America film will involve a Scrull in disguise as a Nazi as well, just as in UA 1.

When my mum told me she was going to see Iron man 2 I told her to stay after the credits. I then had to spend half an hour on the phone explaining who Thor was and then explain what a norse god of thunder has to do with a man in an iron suit. God knows how I'm gonna explain what a skrull is. Thing I'm trying to say is these movies can get too fanboy and nerdish and they could forget about the average film goer who doesn't read much comics and the whole thing could not come across well.

I'm going to keep my expectations in check. Aliens, superheroes, more aliens...this could go either way. It either becomes one of the biggest blockbusters in film history OR it tanks so bad that a sequel becomes a 'maybe'. We'll see.

Well, I hadn't heard about Whedon doing Avengers, so that right there is very positive for me. We already know he can handle ensemble pieces very well. But, I like the direction of the film so far. It does seem like they're packing an awful lot into a single film, so I'm hoping that not everything makes it in. But, if they do go with the whole aliens thing, I'd like to see some type of alien invasion style film take place. Instead of making it into something like Xmen, have The Avengers

Instead of making it into something like Xmen, have The Avengers assembled to thwart an unknown alien threat, something akin to Independence Day or War of the Worlds, where the aliens are really like aliens and not some comic book villains. Also, the Hulk is a great choice for a villain. In fact, I would say go with one or the other, but not both. Anyway, I'll look forward to this movie. Not so much if Thor and Captain America suck.

Super Skrull is an enemy of the Fantastic Four (they're the one who'd discovered them in the "classic" marvel universe) since he have theyre powers, so don't count on him in an Avengers movie...

Well it would probably leave him open to come back to play Banner if he wanted to, and do-able without him if he didn't.

Skrulls being shape shifters can be a perfect way to bring Banner into the story, and then the turning point is having a Skrull shape shifter turn into an Avenger and beat him senseless or start making out with Betty Ross. Bam EVIL HULK

If Norton says no then you just have Loki (or a shape-shifting Betty Ross Skrull) inform the Hulk that The Avengers are trying to kill

Here's my thoughts being typed out as I think them...

Hulk being the main enemy of The Avengers is fantastic. He is more than a force to be reckoned with, it fits perfectly with the version of The Hulk that was present in the newer film and it creates a great new dynamic with a "hero" of one large film becoming the bad guy in another.

So there will need to be a puppet-master for the Hulk, I was expecting them to go with something a little less out there than aliens (maybe an Earth based super-villian to start with) and honestly I'm worried the

So there will need to be a puppet-master for the Hulk, I was expecting them to go with something a little less out there than aliens (maybe an Earth based super-villian to start with) and honestly I'm worried the mere mention of superheroes vs aliens will sorta put off the film going public and deem it all a bit too "silly" (hell I'm worried about how they're going to merge Thor's world with Iron Mans....let alone bring aliens into it).

BUT saying that, a Invasion of the Body Snatchers type action movie could be off the wall type of awesome. I mean who doesn't love body snatchers right? And having The Avengers fighting Skrull versions of themselves could be cool.

Gargh, don't know what to think. Obviously it has to be something BIG for The Avengers to get together in the first place, and The Hulk is that big thing, but introducing even MORE enemies (especially those with a background like the Skrulls) on top of getting together Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Hulk and Loki....

Joss Whedon I will say a prayer for you tonight, you're going to need it.

There is one problem with the Hulk as villain, and that is the ending of the Hulk movie, where Tony Stark seems to be trying to recruit the Hulk for the Avengers. I know it's a vague ending, but that was the tone I got from it.

Trying to recruit him and actualy controlling him are two different things though.

Maybe he was trying to recruit Banner instead.

If we're going WAY out there...maybe it was a Skrull and not Stark at the end of The Hulk....MADNESS

DON'T SHOOT YOUR WAD TO SOON MARVEL

The AVENGERS assembling is big enough for the first movie to fight HULK or something else (Maybe Fing Fang Foom) Build up to an all out superhero WAR EPIC with the SKRULLS or a real version of GALACTUS, Don't blow it like FF4 did.

This could be an epic trilogy in its own right. Avengers vs Skrull!! As long as they stick with the avengers fighting a brainwashed hulk. Imagine captain america and iron man in THAT scene!! gives me goosebumps!
