So far, we have been told that the plot of IRON MAN 3 comes from Warren Ellis' Extremis storyline. We don't know how much will be taken from that series, but there is talk of another female lead that Jessica Chastain will be taking on along with the development of nanotechnology.

Marvel head, Kevin Feige spoke with Empire on their podcast recently and gave some more details on where Tony Stark will be in this installment.

Here's what he said:

"So Iron Man 3 has been structured specifically to be the antidote to The Avengers... Circumstances in the story separate Tony from having access to anything. We wanted to take Tony back to, metaphorically speaking, the cave from Iron Man, the first half of Iron Man, when he's cut off from the world and needs just focus on his intellects to get himself out of his situation. So he's not calling Thor, he's not calling Captain America, he can't press a special button to have the helicarrier come rescue him, so I think that'll be a nice complement to the team up of Avengers."

I'm just glad Marvel isn't going to recycle origin stories.

The plot indicates that Tony Stark might be outside of the armor for much of Iron Man 3. Potentially, RDJ or the producers want RDJ to be seen. Oftentimes, superheroes wear masks. So, I can see how big star (or those paying for him) would want his face to be seen. Then again, the story's plot could be just the story's plot without any Hollywood business and politics involved.

This sounds good, which also maintain the emotional aspect of why Stark is Ironman in the first place.

I love Marvel's overall plan and understanding where they need to go. This makes perfect sense and sounds like exactly what they need to do. It's easier to pull it off for Thor 2 because of the nature of his "nine world" universe.
