Mission: Impossible 4 isn't Mission: Impossible 4?

Just yesterday, we told you Jeremy Renner would star alongside Tom Cruise in MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4. Today we're getting word that Renner and Cruise won't be starring in a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 after all. Wait, wha? Stay with me here...

There were talks early on in the development of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 that the film would introduce a younger agent so when Cruise left the franchise, they could reboot with a new version of Ethan Hunt. It turns out that reboot might be coming sooner than we expected. As it turns out, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 won't be called MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 at all. In fact it won't even have the words "mission" or "impossible" in the title. Paramount is currently evaluating new titles that would serve to relaunch the series, not unlike how WB made a Batman movie titled THE DARK KNIGHT.

While the previous three MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE films all dealt with Ethan Hunt and a team of agents, NOT M:I4 will instead deal with only two agents: Hunt and Renner's as-yet-unnamed character. The two will have equal screentime in this film and for future installments of the franchise, Renner would play the lead while Cruise plays a supporting, mentor-style role. While this isn't a reboot in the true sense of the word, Paramount certainly is trying to liven things up and sources familiar with the script say it has a "fresh perspective" on the series.

So if you're making a MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 4 that won't be called MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, what do you call it? How about MISSION: UNPOSSIBLE?

Really?
I'm sorry but not calling it Mission: Impossible just defeats the purpose.

hmmmmm CHRIS PINE would have been a better replacement in my opinion, renner just isnt a tom cruise type...he's more of a bruce willis type, pine IS a tom cruise type of star though.

anyways, this is sounding awesome, IN BIRD I BELIEVE!

I think it's just a stupid idea. But if studios DID listen to people opinions we would have heard about it... I guess. Beside, the first two movies where mostly "Mission: Tom Cruise" anyway!
Maybe they will just go with
I:MF (just the acronym)... That might work !

It all sound stupid. Can only hope it turns out good.

Strange with Cruise being a mentor to a guy who look as old as him (Cruise looking young).

I have to say I found the 3rd Mission Impossible, to be my favorite one, I like the style and the villian. As for this news its almost a kick in the face. Its all about rebooting and making more money milking a certain franchase down to nothing. As for your guys new names of the film. I believe he said that the words Mission and Impossible were not going to be in the name. As for the new name I

They wanted fans to know its X-Men but didnt have any X-Men in it besides Wolverine mainly. I love the MI series so Im up for a new triolgy but I would like even if somewhere it had Mission Impossible in the title.

Reminds me of Star Trek, how the original crew movies were all numbered, than for the Next Gen movies they just stuck with the subtitle after the Star Trek heading. They should do the same with MI. Actually, you could call this movie Mission Impossible: Generations, because of the whole "passing of the torch" concept. That or just call it Impossible Mission Force.

This is how reboots for franchises like this should go. Hand down the crown to someone but still keep the original guy attached as long as possible as a side note or mentor character.

While I certainly like Renner and Cruise and Brad Bird and have also enjoyed all the previous Mission Impossible films to the point, this seems very odd. Don't know what to think of it. I mean it could work but at the moment seems just off

Bad idea. Just because they want a reboot or a new direction for the franchise doesn't mean they should change the title. I think more people aren't going to recognize Mission Impossiblr under a new name. I'm really looking forward to this movie, because the first 3 are all great and I'm a huge fan of both Cruise and Renner and think Renner has what it takes to carry on the torch.

GOOD IDEA
My only grudge with Cruise is using the name Ethan Hunt and doing away with Jim Phelps. So hopefully they can reboot with Renner playing young Phelps or something. Forget the continuity nightmare just have one name from original show.

So you've got a recognisable, worldwide brand called 'Mission: Impossible' that's been around for decades and you decide to relaunch it by... calling it something else? Well done, Paramount, you're officially helmed by morons!

SAD AND PATHETIC!!
If it's not call Mission Impossible, then it's NOT a mission impossible flick -- then just call it James Bond or in this matter Ethan Bond!!Except for Part 1, part 2 and 3 wasn't a mission impossible type of movie -- should have been called Tom Cruise action movie!! THE IMP CONCEPT IS ABOUT THE TEAM, ALL HAVING EQUAL PARTS ... IT'S NOT ABOUT JUST ONE GUY THINKING HE'S THE TERMINATOR!!

It's easier to juggle an ensemble cast in a television show because you have more time to do so. It's MUCH harder in a film to juggle multiple character story lines within 2 hours or less.

Sure, you can carry them through multiple films, but with 2-4 years between each installment they lose a little bit each time.

The first one ATTEMPTED it, and it worked on some levels, but to me, the third one found the right balance. You seem to forget the third one HAD a team of agents. Three is hard enough, let alone an entire TEAM. (X3 showed how hard it is to juggle multiple characters, and that's just one example). Film adaptations of tv shows HAVE TO change things and take out characters in order to stream line the story into 2 hours. Just the way it goes.

Many people came out of that movie wondering why the characters weren't called, you know, Knight and Day.... Also, I like Renner, and I think he'll be really good with Cruise - but he isn't a 'movie star' who can carry the series after Cruise. There are only a handful of actors these days who are bona fide international movie stars. Oh, and for those who make the Daniel Craig comparison - I knew that guy was a star (and potential Bond) the moment I first saw him in 'Our Friends in the North'.

This is more comparable to Jack Ryan or James Bond movies that DON'T have numbered titles. I don't even know if this can be considered a reboot if there is literally a passing of the torch scenario written in. "Reboot" should be saved for 100% fresh starts attempting to create a franchise

The whole idea behind getting a new director for every MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film is that each film has its own style. Essentially every single MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE film has been a “reboot” of the franchise. This sounds completely retarded and unnecessary.

The good: They're straying from the original franchise which wasn't all that good in the first place and detracted from the original idea. The bad: They're copying the Batman reboot again.

I'm excited to see where this goes.
