Money talks and Paramount is listening: G.I. Joe 3 already in the works

Apr. 1, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

G.I. Joe

G.I. JOE: RETALIATION had a pretty decent Easter weekend. The action movie has raked in $51.7 million since it opened on Thursday domestically and another $80.3 million overseas. While those numbers may not seem huge the film has essentially made back its budget already and is tracking way ahead of G.I. JOE: RISE OF THE COBRA in foreign markets, primarily because of how popular 3D still is internationally.

Variety is reporting that Paramount is quite pleased with how G.I. JOE: RETALIATION has performed so far and are planning on adding another film to the franchise. Although many of us questioned Paramount's decision to push back G.I. JOE: RETALIATION in order to tweak the film, it looks like in the end they may have made the right call (at least financially) and they must feel at least a little vindicated after taking a beating from most people about the film's delayed release.

Obviously it's a little early to know what the third film will be called or who will be returning, but I'm sure we will be getting more news as the project moves forwards.

Extra Tidbit: Which G.I. Joe characters (or actors) would you want to see in the third movie?

Of course Duke just came back to life. They already showed that they can heal burns with Stormshadow.

was the fact that this was a genuine follow up from the original. There was concern that with so many new characters being introduced that this was going to be a reboot or, worse, feel like a direct-to-DVD worry sequel. First one was better

Retaliation felt like a generic action flick and not a GI Joe movie. No one even said "Yo Joe" instead it was hoorah.. Come on. And I love Bruce Willis, but he just felt out of place here. But the worst part of it all (minor spoiler) was what they did with Destro. Compltely ridiculos that he didn't get more than 5 seconds of screen time.

But these guys are villains. If they weren't plotting to kill each other then they'd be the good guys. In real life Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein had people killed rather than have them try to stage a coup against them. It's something that I suspect all dictators have done. Seeing as how most dictator's seized power by force it stands to reason that they might be a bit paranoid.

spoilers

what i don't get, is why they had to reshoot more scenes with tatum, when they just killed him off anyways at the beginning.

Yo Joe!

I liked Retaliation but as a big GI Joe fan I didn't love it. However, I think the movie laid the groundwork to move the franchise in the right direction.

I'd love to see G.I. Joe cartoon theme song somewhere within the movie, i.e. either opening credits or end credits. Extra tidbit: Sgt. Slaughter

Tomax and Xamot. I'd also very much like to see some of the characters from the first film return, such as Said Taghmaoui as Breaker and Rachel Nichols as Scarlett. Especially Rachel Nichols as Scarlett.

Sweet!

I had a blast with this. I would like to see Stalker and Gung-Ho on the Joe side and see Snake get Timber.
For Cobra I would like to see them add Major Bludd and have Destro return. In fact I have been laying out a screenplay for how I think the 3rd should go, but I'll keep that to myself for now.

I like how in this one the Roadblock and Snake Eyes storyline paralleled one another and would still like to see a Snake-Eyes origin story (just not as muffed up as the Wolverine one though)

Joe franchise in terms of popularity...

What can I say? I'm a G.I. Joe geek...

Tidbit

I want the character that was put into a coma by being stabbed in the chest with a snake (it happened) in the GI Joe cartoon movie to be in the next film. Sorry for the spoiler if you get the reference.

While we're at it, might as well make the third movie a live action version of the cartoon film. Come on, live action Golobulus, Nemesis enforcer, SERPENTOR?!?!?!? The greatness just writes itself. Make it happen paramount. THIS I COMMAND!

3D isn't popular overseas, it's usually the only choice.

I saw the movie in 2D in Taiwan. Also the Avengers, Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern, I saw them all in 2D. The last movie I saw in 3D was the Green Hornet and I could have seen it in 2D if I had waited for the next showing. Actually, I suspect my local theater has given up on showing 3D movies because it has been a long time since I was asked if I wanted to see a movie in 2D or 3D and seeing as how I've been seeing movies in 2D I imagine they've all been in 2D. Perhaps people have been complaining about having to pay extra or else wait for teh next showing or maybe the theater got tired of distributing and collecting 3D glasses. The people attending the theater look like they are all high school or university students. (The theater offers students a discount. As a teacher I am also entitled to a discount but I keep forgetting to ask for one.) Students don't like to pay extra for ANYTHING.

Sure, why not? Oh wait, 99% of the team is dead...

Oh and Sgt. Slaughter was on this sequel, or at least he was credited. I think he was just in the background for a brief moment.

Sweet

I actually really liked Retaliation. Not a huge Joe fan, so I don't know who I'd want to see, but you can never go wrong with more Snake Eyes.

I don't know that much about the franchise, it wasn't that big thing in this part of the world, but.... please, bring back Sienna Miller as The Baroness. Pretty please?
