Nia Vardalos & John Corbett will return for My Big Fat Greek Wedding sequel

05.28.2014

Back in 2002 MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING was the little movie that could. The independent film went on to gross over $240 million in domestic theaters (despite never reaching the top spot at the weekly box office charts), and only cost $5 million to produce. I'm guessing star and screenwriter Nia Vardalos is hoping lightning will strike twice with a sequel.

It's been announced Gold Circle, HBO Films and Playtone Productions (backers for the original film) are developing a sequel to MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING. Nia Vardalos will return to write and star, but this time she also wants to direct the movie. John Corbett will be back as well as her husband in the planned film. The sequel will follow "the lovably loud Portokalos family who return after a family secret is revealed and a bigger, fatter wedding brings the big fat Greek family back together again."

Nia Vardalos on the sequel:

“Now that I’m experiencing motherhood, I’m ready to write the next chapter of my family story. Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.”

I really didn't like MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, and have absolutely no interest in seeing the sequel, however there are probably some people who are very excited for MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2. No word on when filming might start or when the sequel will be released, but there will likely be more news on the project in the near future.

I know right. That's how you know something is seriously flawed.

"Of course a few jaded folks in the press corps will claim I ran out of money..."

You mean because you did? In Roger Ebert's review of Connie and Carla, he talked about how, after the success of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Nia Vardalos had pretty much been given a free pass to become a household name and had blown in and predicted that she was in the early stages of fading into obscurity. I think Mr. Ebert was right and THAT is what is motivating this sequel.

I am not very invested in the original film, but that doesn't mean that I can't clearly recognize that this is one of the most unnecessary sequels in recent memory.

Nobody has pointed out the obvious.

That it's been 12 years. A sequel that's made that many years later can only be a box office hit when it has big stars, and this isn't the case. Nia lost most of her fans with every single project she worked in after the movie (including the show MY BIG FAT GREEK LIFE), because they were all bad. Not "worst of all time" material, but mostly forgettable. It's clear that she's a one-trick pony.

None of the other actors (except maybe John) have made something noteworthy either. Andrea Martin

Andrea Martin followed the movie with the Olsen Twins' NEW YORK MINUTE, and Joey Fatone is probably a cab driver (last year's N*Sync reunion didn't change that). Michael Constantine and director Joel Zwick have been relegated to short films and Disney shows respectively. The worst is Lainie Kazan: GIGLI, BRATZ and ZOHAN?!

For the record Joey Fatone is the announcer for the Family Feud hosted by Steve Harvey. Yah that's right the off screen announcer, He's going places.

who gave this the greenlight?

i don't care if someone makes a sequel to this movie because its not my type of film and i won't see it so it doesn't affect me but i am curious who thinks this will make them money?

I couldn't care less but considering we live in the age of unnecessary sequels, why not? Every movie deserves a chance to have a sequel now a days. But with that being said, I wish they could do something along the lines of Before Midnight and revisit the characters all those years later. It shouldn't necessarily be so formulaic with another wedding . It can be a funeral that brings the family together. Maybe kids. I don't know. But another quirky "big fat Greek wedding"? No thanks. I'll pass.

The first film works just fine as a one and done and has a lot of replay value. I'm not saying a proper sequel can't be successful, I'm just saying it may be difficult to garner the popularity for this sequel that the original film had.

Being half greek myself, I could totally relate to my big fat greek wedding and loved it as far as rom-coms go. I'm cautious about a sequel though since everything Nia Vadarlos has done after Greek Wedding has pretty much sucked. But hopefully she pulls it off

Hmmm, I'm not sure if we need a sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding. I liked the movie a lot when it first came out. However, that short-lived TV series (My Big Fat Greek Family, I think) wasn't as good as the actual movie. I don't know if the sequel is a good idea.
