Jeremy Renner's potent performance in THE HURT LOCKER finally got the actor some much-deserved attention, but it doesn't sound like we'll be seeing him share a screen with comic book heavy-hitters like IRON MAN.

About a month ago, Renner said he'd been approached to play Marvel's archer (or Ultimate Marvel's marksman) Hawkeye in future Marvel flicks: "I met with the Marvel guys, actually, but we didn’t talk about Captain America. But one of the writers, Zak Penn, we’ve become friends over time and he was thinking maybe Hawkeye could be interesting. He sounds like an interesting character. If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers. But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun."

But unfortunately the arrows and/or bullets weren't meant to fly from Renner's hands. As he just recently updated to Movieline: "That was just one of those things that got blown way out of proportion. It was an idea. Those Marvel guys, I’m a big fan of them. They’re so smart about how they want to do these things — they have CAPTAIN AMERICA, and THOR coming around, IRON MAN 2, and then I happen to know Zak Penn, who’s writing THE AVENGERS. So they thought Hawkeye is an interesting role, and asked me if I knew anything about him. I said no, so they gave me their sort of spiel on what he was, and I thought that it was kind of interesting. The only reason it came out this early, because AVENGERS is two years away, is that they’re thinking OK, we may throw him in THOR , we may not, as a cameo. You know what I mean? So there’s truth that we talked about it, but there’s no truth to me doing it."

Maybe it will still come around -- Renner already has his next (Ben Affleck's heist movie THE TOWN) in the can and doesn't seem to have anything else booked yet, so maybe they'll find a way to make a deal for Marvel's deadshot.

Extra Tidbit: Renner actively pursued the lead role in MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, but Tom Hardy got the gig.

all this means is that...
marvel told him to shut the fuck up because they hadn't officially decided on anything yet.

Hawkeye should have been in ironman 2, the character started out as a villain for shell head.

Good
This guy wants to do real roles, comic book movies are a joke nowadays, just for the Fanboys to eat up.

Renner
I hope Renner eventually gets the job, it'd be cool to see him in THOR but Marvelprobably wants to give him his own film before adding him to the Avengers, that way people can sorta know what he's about and where he comes from.

All I know is he should do something good and do it soon while he's still relatively hot.

I'll be damned
Renner is the spitting image of Hawkeye. He really doesn't look like Cap.

Renner hasn't denied anything: the part is his. The question is whether or not there will even be a Hawkeye in the Avengers and, if so, whether he'll be introduced in an earlier movie or not.

Meh, he deserves better.
Only thing I know about Hawkeye is that he was a beast to play with in Marvel Ultimate Alliance Gold Edition and comic-book characters that need weapons to kick ass that aren't named Batman or Blade are IMHO, D-list characters.

After following the guy's career all the way back to his roles in National Lampoon's Senior Trip (1995, 7/10...I'm only 25 now and feel old as fuck having...

After following the guy's career all the way back to his roles in National Lampoon's Senior Trip (1995, 7/10...I'm only 25 now and feel old as fuck having remembered that), the underrated Dahmer (2002, 6/10), the surprisingly good Love Comes To The Executioner (2006, 7/10), and the damn-near perfect The Hurt Locker (2009, 9/10)...I'm not even gonna beat around the bush...

this dude DESERVES Captain America.

nah there are a ton more characters that need weapons who aren't "D-list"

- green lantern (ring)
- wolverine (claws)
- deadpool (swords/guns)
- IRON MAN?! (lasers, guns, missles, etc.)
- all FIVE power rangers
