Rumor: David Tennant is being eyed for Plastic Man in Justice League

Sep. 6, 2013by: Niki Stephens

From one BBC darling to another, we have a fun rumor about the tenth doctor, David Tennant.

Over at the RPF (Replica Prop) Forums, a user by the name of Jet Beetle dropped some interesting knowledge after starting a thread called "Hey Kids--Let's cast THE JUSTICE LEAGUE (plus a rumor I heard at WB)". Here's what he offered up:

A couple of producers I know told me they were involved with the upcoming Justice League movie -- I've known these guys for years and as nice as they are they have never been involved with something as big as JL, so who knows. They did say Warner is basically trying to follow Marvel's lead (no surprise there) and amongst the heavy hitters already expected to be on hand (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman) they want to put in a comic relief character (they seem to believe this is what Ant Man will be - no matter how much I defended the character I had to admit I had no idea how Pym will be handled in this upcoming film). Then when they told me the character Warner was planning to include.... well, I smiled and could totally see it as a good thing. The idea of Plastic Man bouncing all over the place and the fact that the studio is looking at David Tennent to bring him to life -- it was the first time I got excited to see a Justice League movie. So let's look at the characters - and seeing how none of us know what the line-up will be, go ahead and put in your personal fantasy players and who will play them.

Tennant was most recently linked to the voice of Rocket Raccoon in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. Sadly, that didn't turn out to be true so naturally we want the actor for something else. While I do like Benedict Cumberbatch, my girly fandom goes to Tennant. If they got him for any hero flick I would be elated. But again this is a big fat rumor. I just thought it would be interesting to ponder since we haven't spoken much about the appearance of Plastic Man.

A known crook from a young age, Patrick "Eel" O'Brian is given his ability to be super malleable after he was doused with a large amount of chemical liquid during a heist gone wrong. To read more about the character, head here

Would you accept Tennant as your Plastic Man? Or should they ditch the character altogether?

I keep saying WB's are making this up as they go along...show me some proof that this isn't so? You want a comic relief character in your group? Did they not see their own Justice League animated series...and see how well Flash came across??? FFS...just watch the episode where he switches bodies with Lex - lolzzz - brilliant stuff. Someone tell me ...why are the DC people behind the comics or the animated world not playing any part in the decision making process....because I can't believe

Hell, even Fox have a comic man taking control of their world...that at this moment in time...looks like they're going to wipe the floor with WB's DC cinematic universe ...never mind Marvel.

I'm actually ok with this, Plastic Man is a crap character but could be alright if done properly.

Well now, if that's not evidence that

Warner Bros is STILL determined to screw this movie up, I don't know what is? What is it with the WB? Is it a generational thing for these dumb executives to trip up over themselves? I mean, for DECADES they've either been sabotaging their own DC properties or just flat out losing money by not doing ANYTHING with them. I mean HOLY CHRIST, BATMAN...it would be hilarious if it wasn't so spot-on and painful. It's like effing clockwork. Snyder and Nolan need to shut these morons down. I like

I like Plastic Man, but he's not a character you bring into the first Justice League movie. And the idea that they so desperately need comic relief is idiotic and further evidence that they don't understand anything about these characters, movies, or stories. Ugh.

Tennant's great. Got that out of the way . . .

Last I heard, they weren't even featuring Aquaman or Martian Manhunter. If they didn't make the cut & friggin' Plastic Man DID? Wow. That'd be terrible . . .

Fine I guess

The casting works, But it's a character not needed for the first film (or at all - do they even need a comic relief character for a JL film? I can only assume he'll end up as jar jar. ). It's just weird with DC to have SOOOOO much to do, the first supposed leak of info is about plastic man, a comic-relief character. Further proof (to me) they don't know what they are doing and are making it up as they go....God I hope Goyer doesn't use parts from that '02 script.

Oh, so you'll get a skinny bloke to play Plastic Man, but you won't get a tall bloke to play Jack Reacher?

Is it just me?

When I look at the image of Plastic Man at the top of this article, I see Stephen Colbert.

If this turns out to be true, which I highly doubt it will, but if true, it's just more proof that WB/DC have no clue as to what they are doing with their properties outside Batman...and even there...

Just because you dont know anything about the character doesnt make DC know nothing about what they're doing.

@Half, I've been reading comic books for about the last 29 years now, which means I got bit by the comic book bug when I was about 6. Not to mention all comic book derivatives like cartoons, novels, movies, toys, etc etc. Which means there are good chances I may know more of the character than you. Might be wrong, I don't know, but what I do know is that I know enough about Plastic Man to know WB/DC should not include him in Justice League. If they want comic relief, Green Lantern or even

If they want comic relief, Green Lantern or even better yet, the Flash, can fill that slot perfectly.

It would be awesome casting, but I don't see it being true or happening. I mean out of all of the casting rumors, we get something on Plastic Man? But nothing on who may be playing Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, etc.

Petition for Tim Curry

I really want Tim Curry to be manipulating television as G. Gordon. Pumping out Xenophobia, that really makes new heroes question sticking around once there is a resolution.

Global alien attack

I was struck by the need to justify the destruction in Man of Steel by Snyder, and I think the destruction will be used as a reference to introduce the rest of the founding members. Pollution and fallout effecting the ocean reaching Atlantis and Thermoscera can allow both Aqua Man and Wonder Woman a reason to expose themselves. Neither really need complex intros Atlantis and amazons known about, just make sure one has a scaly wet suit and one looks like they walked off 300 set, blah blah blah

Harder sells are Man Hunter, Flash, and Cyborg (he will come sooner than at least one founder). Man hunter or GL come to warn Supes about Darkseid, easier intro for Manhunter than a cop in disguise, but GL hearing chatter at OA and already fully aware of Superman debuting in his sector works even better to tie movies together. Again the way introduced allows for less introduction, they are both alien powered, so crazy sciency grab bag of abilities. That leaves Flash as an origin story in 1st movie letting audience follow his growth in 1st movie and Cyborg's horrible origin raising the bar in the second movie.

Great idea for Plastic Man

Having said that it is an inspired choice for a fun character to bring into a future film. AND once a Justice League movie is successful, later films will have an easier time than Marvel. There is 60 years of people knowing about Super Friends Hall of Justice / Watch Tower whatever. They have a central office that sends out a squad of heroes to tackle a specific problem, and you could see 30+ heroes interviewing, eating etc in background in future DC movies (Like Wreck-it-Ralph), all they need

BS

I do not believe it for a second, unless there are a slate of stretch arm strongs were found in a warehouse along with a pile of elvis sunglasses. First Class had Charles and Eric pre-established like Clark and Bruce, they introduce a wild card Mystique full motivation, Beast with an origin, Havok and Banshee get training montages, rest name/alias/attitude. That worked, but it was close to too many new characters at once. Avengers really introduced Hawkeye, but had to use him as a villain with

Remember how in the Avengers everyone was funny, yet no one was the "comic relief?"

Do it like that DC. Superman has his charming quips, Flash is a wiseacre, Batman a gritty one-liner for every occasion.

Tennant's proving his dramatic acting chops on Broadchurch right now. And I'm guessing DC will opt against including Plastic Man (especially if it means ditching Flash, Green Lantern, or Martian Manhunter) given most audiences will mistake him for Mr. Fantastic.

I love Tennant and would love him to get a piece of the superhero action... But somehow I don't buy this rumour at all.

Whilst I expect more humour in the world set out in MoS than that of the Dark Knight trilogy - it's still pretty serious. A lot will ride on these films and as its going to be a tough enough job bringing in the likes of Wonder Woman and (either a new version of OR return if Reynolds') Green Lantern etc... I don't think they'd bother with Plastic Man just yet.

Also, considering they're still casting Batman VS Superman - I'm sure it's way too early to be having casting rumours for the JL film

I never would have thought Plastic man would ever make it to the big screen but this gives me hope. He's such an underrated character. Both Grant Morrison and Mark Wade handled him perfectly during their run of JLA and made every realize that Plastic man is not just a man of jokes. This has gotten me excited!!

That would actually be pretty interesting since he's really funny, although it might also be a bit of a waste of Tennant's talent.
