Spoilerish concept art for Iron Man 3 features Robert Downey Jr. caught by surprise

Jul. 3, 2012by: Paul Shirey

A new piece of concept art for IRON MAN 3 has been revealed, featuring Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) caught by surprise with gunmen closing in. The artwork will be given out as a poster at this year's San Diego Comic Con and is painted by frequent Marvel concept artist Ryan Meinerding.

Take a look:

There's plenty of speculation to be had with this image, from the half-assembled armor, the gun-toting villains(?), and the location (Stark's home?). We could go around the clock on all of it, but no matter what, it's just cool to see some official work from the film...even if it's painted.

Director Shane Black (KISS KISS, BANG BANG) is at the helm this time, which makes me ecstatic, and with a flood of set photos and casting additions in the last few months the anticipation is kicking off early for the armored avenger's third outing. The script is borrowing many elements from the "Extremis" storyline in the comics, but not exclusively. I have no doubt that Black will have some serious ass-kickery in store for us, not to mention some surprising twists throughout.

Thus far, this is looking to be the most promising of Marvel's Phase Two films.

IRON MAN 3 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, James Badge Dale, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, Jon Favreau, Paul Bettany, and Cobie Smulders (yes!) and is slated to open on May 3, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: It seems that Cobie Smulder's Agent Maria Hill will be taking the place of Phil Coulson as the S.H.I.E.L.D. presence for Phase Two. Any problems with that?

Inverted Red/Gold Armour

If you've been reading the recent take on Iron Man the concept art may give a HUGE spoiler on what the armour may look like in the new Iron Man movie. It , honest to god, looks like an inverted colour scheme of the recent take on Marvels Iron Man within their comic. Seriously, take a look at it then take a look at this [link] . Put the red where the gold should be and there you have it ! .. I for one am kinda pumped if they go this route. ">

Tidbit

No one can ever take the place of Coulson. They might fill in his role, but they will never take his place.

Cobie wasn't bad...

Just felt that her character was undeveloped. I think given more screen time for her character to resonate with fans, she'll fit the build perfectly. In addition, I think it's odd that people have such a huge issue with her, or Coulson's characters for that matter. I think they played out their roles perfectly, both in terms of acting and in progressing the Avengers storyline along. I'm hoping that after Iron Man 3, people will start warming up to her.

Maria Hill is a pretty big part of the regular Marvel U these days. She has also, on occasion, bumped uglies with Tony Stark, so her presence in this film could possibly end up as a "consultant with benefits" kind of thing. Also, Hill is known in the books for being a major hard ass (literally and figuratively) who comes off as cold and ruthless, but has since mellowed out a lot since Civil War (now that would be a great Marvel film...).

Coulson was cool and I dug his presence. Really, I

Coulson was cool and I dug his presence. Really, I didn't see the need for him to go out that way, but I don't get paid millions of bones to make those calls, either.

Personally, I love Cobie on HIMYM and I'm stoked to see her branch out a bit. Hill will never get her own movie, but hopefully the role will open doors for Mrs. Smulders into other roles.

I loved Colbie Smulders as Maria Hill and thought she looked as good as ScarJo in a catsuit. Hopefully her role is expanded and her character adequately developed.

Cobie was fucking terrible in avengers. She was very one dimensional and stiff in my opinion. I honestly thought she was just a meat shield of boobies for people to gawk at. I didn't know she would actually become important.

critics (and Joss Whedon apparently) seem to be under the mistaken impression that we really, truly gave a shit about Coulson. We didnt. When you consider Iron Man is a main character, Hawkeye a secondary. what the fuck do you think we care about Phil? Replace him with H.E.R.B.I.E for all we care.

You're in the slim minority of people who doesn't care for Coulson. He was one of the best aspects of the series.

Well numbers speak for themselves, don't they? I guess you are in the minority... I mean, how can you NOT care about Coulson??

Extra Tidbit: Loved her in The Avengers. How she was unafraid to call out Fury on his hubristic BS, but also ready to rock and roll with her sidearm at the drop of a grenade.

And its clear that they were building her up to take up the Phil Coulson banner as the 'glue' of the Marvelverse.

Love the painted art. Iron Man 1 set the bar high for the other solo Avenger films, Iron Man 3 will set the bar high for phase 2 for the solo Avenger films.

No way in hell was she the worst part of Avengers! If I can watch her in Avengers and not ask myself why Robin Sparkles is playing Agent, then she did her job well.
