The 14th Annual Golden Schmoes nominees are announced!

02.06.2015

Thanks to your nominations we have now compiled the final list of nominees for The 14th Annual JoBlo Movie Awards (aka The Golden Schmoes)! Final voting begins tomorrow and runs from Monday, February 9th through Thursday, February 19th, with winners to be announced on Friday, February 20th, just ahead of the Oscars!

There's a healthy mix of the expected in the nominations this year, but not without the odd surprise here and there. While BOYHOOD has been sweeping up awards left and right, it only accounted for a few nominations, with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, BIRDMAN and INTERSTELLAR leading the pack for the most nominated. There was a lot of love for both EDGE OF TOMORROW and UNDER THE SKIN as well, which was nice to see. It was also good to see CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER get some recognition, as it was mostly overlooked on a lot of end-of-year lists after a great box office run and critical reception.

No records were broken in terms of MOST nominations (which still belongs to Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION with 19 nominations), but some were obviously favored more than others (see the most-nominated below). The selections were very consistent with the JoBlo.com audience and for that, we're very proud. While you could say that anything Nolan or Marvel is an easy shoe-in for us, we'll take that as a compliment (Also to note: Nothing Middle-Earth related this year for once!). There's plenty of other nominees that cross into the critical fave realm, but the fan-based selections always make us happy as we feel there's room for all types of films when you're talking about the best of the year. Now comes the really fun part: Choosing the winners! But first, take a look at all the nominees and start mulling over who you'll vote for come Monday morning!

Birdman (11)
Interstellar (10)

We will also be running our 14TH ANNUAL OSCAR PREDICTION CONTEST this year, so stay tuned for that as well. See previous years' GOLDEN SCHMOES winners below, along with this year's crop of nominations per category. Thanks for participating!

I thought this was a movie fan website, not a comic book fan website?

Guardians and Captain America 2 were overrated and disappointing. Guardians was the same as The Avengers only in space, and CA2 was missing it's Winter Solider more than Godzilla was missing Godzilla. Also the film's editing was impossible to follow in action scenes, and especially in night scenes.
We should just automatically nominate Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow for Best T&A any time for character is in a movie. Did no one think about nominating her in Under The Skin? She exposes all

Not a lot of love here for Dawn of The Planet of the Apes, which was far superior than Guardians and Captain 2 COMBINED!

From Cap 2 to Guardians to Interstellar to The Babadook to John Wick and on and on...

I don't agree with every nominee, but I'm pleased as punch with what we have this year.

i think what happened was that this year there were no real front runners for the fans of this site. There was no Speilberg, Scorsese, or Tarantino that usually are easy sells. Even Chris Nolan, David Fincher and Peter Jackson, who usually edge out the top spots had less than stellar year (interstellar was good, but was it better than Inception or TDK?). The fans were divided over films that were good, but not great. Im thinking no movie up for the top award got more than 50% of nominating

They just got the most out of everyone's eclectic choices.

Birdman was the only clear sell for people. Who actually saw "Boyhood" or "Whiplash"? At $25mil and $8mil, not a high percentage of the film going audience it seems. (i know some of you saw it, but more obviously saw GotG). Face it, 2014 had some good movies, but nothing that stands out as great or new classics.

You bring up a good point, Nowheredan...a lot of folks simply didn't see many of the critical darlings of last year...and not because they didn't want to, but because they simply weren't available. Birdman, Boyhood, Whiplash, Foxcatcher and Nightcrawler, to name a few, didn't get as wide a release as many other titles. I'd definitely recommend to everyone to take advantage of early release titles on iTunes or VOD when available. It's been a go-to resource for me when I can't catch 'em in the

Hey guys! Thanks for the comments. I actually enjoyed reading them. I found myself agreeing on certain points. 2014 was not a very strong year in "grand" Best Picture style films, but there were still good films for us to enjoy and love. I enjoy comic book films, but not every single one of them. I love The Dark Knight (A+), Spider-Man 2 (A), Superman: The Movie (A), The Amazing Spider-Man (A-), and the first Iron Man (A-), I'll even admit to enjoying and liking Iron Man 3 (B-). However, I'm

However, I'm sooooooooooo tried of everyone going bananas over anything with "Marvel Studios" name on it. Guardians was the same as The Avengers only in Star Trek style space. Iron Man 2 focused too much time on setting up The Avengers that it almost abandon the film's main plot, Captain America 2 is an action film were the action scenes were impossible follow, worse than a Bourne film. I'm not all about Award winning films. I'm just open minded and will actually call out when a film is actually good and when it's not. I'm not against Marvel and just a DC guy or anything dumb like that, I want these films to be good and entertaining, but they're coming up short and are barely even trying to be rememberable. This is just my opinion, and I thank you Paul for taking the time to respond to my comment.

I still think GOTG was a very good film. A solid 8/10 for sure. But when I think of truly great movies at the end of each year, Guardians had some small flaws that just keep it from being GREAT. Nothing wrong with any of that. But Joblo moviefans truly praised it a little too much IMO.

Not gonna lie, I thought Guardians was disappointing. **1/2 out of ****. I enjoy a decent amount of it, and I liked Starlord and Rocket, but that's it. It was nothing new from Marvel Studios, it was The Avengers meets Star Trek, same style of plot, same style of characters, and a really weak villain. I may have liked the film more if it had not been overblown by all the fanboys on Joblo. It was like hearing "Let It Go" over and over and over.

I'm fairly pleased with the nominations. I'm very glad to see Jake Gyllenhaal on there and not Bradley Cooper. I was pretty surprised John Wick's nightclub scene didn't make it onto the action scene list and that the docking sequence in Interstellar didn't make either the action list or the memorable scene list.

Everyone needs to relax

Some of you need to chill out here a bit. It's perfectly fine if you don't like the nominees, but those nominees were all determined by those who are members of the site and took part in the nomination portion of the Golden Schmoes. Insulting the choices is insulting them and that's more than outside of our rules/guidelines for the site. If you can't disagree/debate on the topic at hand respectfully and without insulting members OR the site itself then that's grounds for being banned from the

If you can't disagree/debate on the topic at hand respectfully and without insulting members OR the site itself then that's grounds for being banned from the MFC. If you ever have any question as to what those rules/guidelines are, just hover over the Rules/Guidelines right next to where you type your post.

It's okay to disagree. Hell, even I disagreed with some of the selections, but in the end it's not my call. The numbers came in and this is what we have. However, I think it represents our audience well and if that bothers you then perhaps this isn't the place for you. That in no way means you can't disagree or voice that disagreement. Personally, I enjoy a good debate and I like to hear other perspectives. Ultimately, that's what the Golden Schmoes are all about: YOUR VOICE. So, relax. Have fun. Be excellent to each other.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get back to my latte, affix my beanie cap and non-prescription glasses, adjust my skinny jeans, put my oversized headphones on and play my LPs on my antique record player. Also, I'm in a coffee shop. An organic one.

Here's the thing or problem with one of the categories. Why does the T&A category have nominees that didn't show T&A in the movies their nominated for or at all?

You guys cast your votes, not me. Whatever you, as readers, determine to be best T&A is what gets put in there. I was just as surprised to see more votes (In fact, A LOT more) for ScarJo in Cap 2 than in Under The Skin, but that's how they came out. Also, T&A doesn't exclusively mean they have to show full-on nudity. Ultimately, you guys determine what qualifies in the nomination period. You could've nominated Melissa McCarthy for Tammy if enough of you so desired. (And yes, we can track anyone

People need to see more movies

Marvel has taken over these awards like Twilight took over the MTV Movie Awards

Captain America 2 AND Guardians of the Galaxy for Best Movie over the likes of Boyhood, Whiplash, Nightcrawler, or Snowpiercer?

Guardians and Captain American 2 were both overrated and disappointing! Boyhood, Whiplash, Nightcrawler, and Snowpiercer were all original and were not the same Marvel film over and over and over.

You got my up vote.

Amazing Spider-Man

I agree with As2 Being on the biggest disappointment list, but worst movie of the year? Really? There were so many movies that were much worse than that. It doesn't deserve that category.

No Fury?

I'm not surprised to see the most important movie of the year, Selma, snubbed here. But I am shocked to see that Fury, a movie that was praised by both this site's staff and community, was completely snubbed. Overall, I guess it's still a little better than the Oscar noms.

Fury felt too self-important to me. That's why I didn't nominate myself. No memorable lines for me either. Just multiple war movie cliches, which is not unexpected coming from David Ayer.

Disapointed!

Not to sound like a whinney bitch but pretty much nothing I was rooting for got niminated. No recignition for Cooper, Amy Dunn, Emily Blunt in Edge of Tommorow for coolest charecter. I figured at least Groot would be a shoo in for that. How could "its not possible its necessary" not get nominated for best line. Also no love at all for Sharknado 2 or Stretch!

A little dissappointed that X-Men didn't get as much love as it deserved ( yeah i know Guardians overshadowed X-Men but still it was one of the best X-men movies)...Another Snub was LUCY. I thought it was a pretty trippy movie. And how the fuck does the Lego Movie not get nominated for Trippiest movie of the year. The FX alone had me tripping balls.

Well said Mike,

And no Shawn, its not. I wouldn't consider myself a fanboy, moreso a fan of ambitious and original film making. As for Godzilla, I actually did like it and didn't see many problems with it. Only main complaint being underdeveloped human characters. So instead of hating on everyone, realize others have differing opinions that matter just as much as yours.

Thank god Jake Gyllenhaal was included in the best Actor category!

But: C'mon! The Winter Soldier is included on the Coolest character list and JK Simmons' Fletcher was not?
The Winter Soldier had potential but in my opinion the character himself was underdeveloped. On the other hand, while Whiplash was a great movie it would be half as good without Fletcher. I also miss the line "Not quite my tempo" from the qoutes. And some of other lines from Guardians of the Galaxy ("Nothing goes over my head! My reflexes are too fast", "Metaphor", etc.).
Otherwise,

I agree, JK Simmons was the standout in that movie. Although i don't care for Miles Teller, his drumming in that movie was on point.

Meh

If the Oscars pick too much drama, then the schmoes pick way too much action/kiddy-flicks. I think something in the middle would be better. These were my choices: [link]

@andris In a way that I didn't like the film and it got decent reviews? Is that not the criteria?

I am glad to see John Wick get nominated, but...

Expendables 3 gets a best action sequence nod for it's cheap DTV climax over Wick's Red Circle scene? Please.

Also, Best T&A: ScarJo didn't show T&A in Cap 2, she showed it in Under the Skin. And Emily Blunt didn't show T&A in Edge of Tomorrow or any other film this year. Clearly, people don't really know what T&A is.

Most of the awards are warranted and am glad to see that John Wick got some love on this website. Awesome, underrates film.

I just don't understand how Steve Carrell got nominated for Best Actor. His performance wasn't really that great and is overrated in my opinion. And I'm surprised American Sniper got nominated for most overrated. I thought Inherent Vice was indeed one the most disappointing and overrated films of the year.

Inherent Vice was pretty good. It kind of had that Big Lebowski feel for like the first hour and a half. I feel like it's one of those films i gotta watch a second time to get.

Maybe I just need to see it again. I just felt like the plot was all over the God damn place.

The biggest disappointment of the year for me is Transcendence. So many stars, so much potential.

I can't believe Mockingjay didn't make the list for biggest disappointment of the year. Other than that I think the selections are pretty spot on.

Dumb & Dumber To should not win BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR because, while it did suck, it sucking or not being that good should have been expected.

And Steve Carell should DEFINITELY not win BEST ACTOR OF THE YEAR for Foxcatcher because he talked the same way for 95% of the movie and it wasn't in some captivating, moving way. He just talked in slow, boring, plain way. He shouldn't have even been nominated.

I agree about Steve Carrell and the fact that he shouldn't have been nominated. The performance was average at best and definitely not Oscar worthy in my opinion.
