For those of you looking to complete your trilogy at home, Warner Bros has officially announced the release of THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES is slated to hit the premium format alongside DVD and Digital HD on March 24th. Outside of the inevitable deluxe edition closer to Christmas. this will be the final Middle-Earth film from Peter Jackson to debut on home video.

THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES will be released on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack for $44.95, Blu-ray Combo Pack for $44.95 and 2-disc DVD Special Edition for $28.98. All three versions will come packaged with the following special features:

·    Recruiting the Five Armies

·    Completing Middle-earth

·    The Last Goodbye: Behind the Scenes

·    The Last Goodbye Music Video

·    New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth, Part 3

While many fans were disappointed with the new trilogy, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES was a satisfying conclusion to the films that seemed to balance everything that made THE LORD OF THE RINGS so good. Epic battles, memorable characters, and beautiful New Zealand scenery abound alongside an enhanced plot featuring further characters and storylines not in the original novel.

Much like THE LORD OF THE RINGS, I am interested to watch all three of THE HOBBIT films in a row to see how well the story flows over the over six hour run-time. Maybe in the comfort of your home theater it may be a different experience than spread over three viewings, three years apart at the cinema.

The series just lacked purpose.

Lord of the Rings had a simple clear point. Get the Ring to the volcano and so defeat the big bad guy.

This series felt a bit aimless. And fighting endless CGI Orcs just got tiresome after an hour or so.

Yeah I feel the same. Not really that excited about buying this at all. In fact I may even pass.

More than any of the other films, I feel this one will benefit from an extended edition. They really rushed the ending, with little closure going into the stories for Bard or the dwarves (but somehow there's plenty of time for Legolas). I guess since people complained about the multiple endings of Return of the King, they didn't want to drag out the ending.

Easily the worst of the Middle Earth-based Jackson films, but I will (most likely) still end up buying it to complete my collection.

The extended editions of the Hobbit films so far have been mostly improvements (I like the theatrical Unexpected Journey fine, but will never watch Desolation theatrical again)

I thought it was a fitting conclusion to the trilogy and the end battle alone was one of the best scenes of 2014 (in my opinion).

Now I'm sure I'll be tempted to purchase this, but you know that they will release an extended edition like the previous five films and/or just release one big box set with all six films.
