The Spider-Man Reboot Round-Up

Jan. 12, 2010by: Mike Sampson

Yesterday afternoon the news broke, in one of the more shocking developments since I've been writing for this site, that Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were off SPIDER-MAN 4 and Sony Pictures was moving ahead with a reboot of the franchise. With news this big, there's obviously a lot more news than the initial story (which is covered here) so I thought I'd do a little round-up of all the little tidbits that have leaked out since yesterday's press release.

- The LA Times reports that one of the main sticking points besides the script was, duh, money. Sony wanted to spend about $230 million on the film, far less than the $300 million SPIDER-MAN 3 cost, but Raimi didn't feel like he could deliver the film for that budget.

- This was widely feared in a lot of the conversations about the reboot yesterday and Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that Sony is looking for "a more gritty, contemporary redo of the series" not unlike what Christopher Nolan did with BATMAN BEGINS. They also added that, despite how early we are in the process, Marc Webb (500 DAYS OF SUMMER) is one director whose name has apparently "popped up" in connection with the directing gig.

- Raimi issued a statement in yesterday's press release but we hadn't heard anything official from Maguire. Deadline Hollywood was able to get a statement from the former Peter Parker who was rather diplomatic. "I am so proud of what we accomplished with the Spider-Man franchise over the last decade. Beyond the films themselves I have formed some deep and lasting friendships. I am excited to see the next chapter unfold in this incredible story.

- Finally, chalk this up as a rumor, but Ain't It Cool is saying one of the big issues with the many scripts floating around was that Peter Parker and Mary Jane would be having (or would have) a baby in the film. And for that I have to thank Sam Raimi for not going forward with this and walking away.

I'm sure there will be a LOT more news on SPIDER-MAN as the days and weeks go on and, maybe, one of the scrapped scripts will even make its way to the web.

Extra Tidbit: Lots of angry nerds on Twitter yesterday. They needed a Wonder Joint to chill out.

What!?

He didn't feel he could deliver the film he wanted for $230m!? Maybe if you didn't have to pay stupid amounts of money for Quivering Lip Maguire and Wilted Flower Dunst not to mention taking a massive salary for Probably Deserves It Sometimes Raimi.

For once I side with the studio on this, you make the movie you can with the money you're given or as we found out you don't make it at all.

I wouldn't go "gritty" for Spiderman. I knew as soon as Bryan Singer was on Superman that he was the

I wouldn't go "gritty" for Spiderman. I knew as soon as Bryan Singer was on Superman that he was the wrong director because Superman isn't gritty. It's hopeful while Spiderman is fun. At least Raimi got that aspect right...for the first one at least.

I suppose if Raimi really wanted a larger budget he could've tried to hook up product placement for Kleenex in the 4th one...I'm pretty sure there'd be a group crying session in the new one, one where Peter Parker can really get in touch with his emotions.

I know it won't happen, but what if Batman goes south. Spiderman is not Batman. Why is EVERYONE trying to be batman. The Dark Knight was THAT epic that everyone needs to copy it.

Sam Raimi did it better than anyone could. This is the worst idea EVER. I don't care that they were going to have a baby in the 4th, I trust Raimi because all that mattered is that Vulture would be the villain. I have wanted Vulture from the beginning, and with rumors of john malkovich playing him...That sounds like it had so much potential...

How disappointing. Oh well. Disney soon or later will get those rights back while sony will wish they milked this cow dry.

As much as I like Sam Raimi, I don't think it definitely spells doom for the Spider-Man films. Whoever they do get to direct/star in a new movie has a lot to live up to, but also the benefit of hindsight after Spider-Man 3, and it's not like Sony will want another poorly received film. Reboot is an overused term, but recasting and a fresh perspective on the story isn't the worst idea for the Spider-Man movies.

If that baby rumor is true I'm glad Raimi was pushed out of the production. As for the darker tone I'm interested in seeing what they can do but I hope we can get wisecracking Spider-Man. He's so famous for having a really sarcastic approach to his job as a superhero. The whole point of the wisecracks is that the talking distracts his enemies who get so angry at his constant banter that they become sloppy and eventually defeat themselves. It's a shame Raimi didn't put any of that in the movies.

Bad Idea For Several Reasons...

1) The "darker, grittier" thing worked for Batman, as his stories lend to that rather naturally. Spider-Man does not! Read the comics. The worst ones are when the writers/artisits try making him as a dark hero. Spider-Man is all about having fun with the powers, smarting off, etc.

2) Too damn soon for a reboot. Give us until 2015. Give it a rest until then.

3) No matter who is in this or who's directing, it will not top "Spider-Man 2", so why even bother?

4) If they do a whole reboot,

4) If they do a whole reboot, wouldn't that nix any exisiting scripts, which are, very presumably,, in some form, sequels to what already exists within the movies? So, doesn't this mean they'd have to start froms scratch all over again anyways, so why not let Raimi get his way, because either way, they need a whole new script.

I'm still not sure what to make of this. On one hand I'm down for an all new cast (never really cared for Maguire as Spidey anyway) and it will be interesting to see where they go with this. On the other hand, even though I'm down for something different, I just think it's TOO SOON for a reboot. So I'm kinda torn on this news....time will tell I guess....

A good Spider-man film isn't like a good Batman film...

I love Nolan's franchise to death, but that's because they found the right tone for that particular character. One recurring criticism of Raimi's take was that it wasn't funny enough. Sure, Spider-man was always a bit "soapy" but it was witty as well. If they try to go dark, they're gonna burn themselves!

It always seemed like the Vulture was the real sticking point with the development on this film so the studio gets what it wants and the old crew can now move onto other things. This story is still only just beginning, but word of advice Sony - keep Joel Schumacher out of it!

Not every superhero is fucking Batman. Batman is dark and gritty because he is fucking BATMAN. NOT FUCKING SPIDER-MAN. The Studios need to chill and stop with the "Dark and gritty" bull shit.

Also that baby is a terrible idea this early in the film franchise.

Gritty doesn't mean moody

Spidey can never be like Batman, he is full of zest and one-liners. And I hope they make it more over the top as well as less kiddie-friendly. Nolan's Bat is so realistic it almost looks silly to have a supersuit in there.

Grittier is great!

Raimi's and Maguire's take was way too soap-opera and wimpy. Spidey must wisecrack, villains must be dangerous. Let Kazuaki Kiriya of Casshern direct, that's how crazy they should make the action.

GRITTY???

Spider-man isn't supposed to be fuckin' GRITTY! What the fuck are they talking about?!

If I hear one more goddamn studio talk about re-tooling their comic book properties to make them more like Nolan's Batman films, I swear I'm gonna fucking hurl myself out of a window (and this is coming from ME, Nolan's biggest fan!). But really, this shit is fucking obnoxious.

Don't make it to Dark

spider-man isn't batman. Just make it realistic and have some fun. Also no organic webshooters!! some of the best times are when spidey runs out of web fluid, or has to make a new specialized mixture to help him defeat his enemy. If only there was some way marvel studios could get their hands on this. One can dream

$230 million wasn't enough? Seriously Raimi you greedy bastard? The Dark Knight only cost $180, and Super Returns cost $250 all together. I'm glad we're getting a reboot, and I'm now thinking how gritty and contemporary they're going to make it.

Wow...that baby part sounds like something Raimi would actually do too. He did afterall turn Sandman into Uncle Ben's killer. Either way, this news sucks, since I certainly don't want Spider-baby, but I also wanted Marvel Studios to get the rights back some day and do their OWN reboot. Fat chance of that now.

A Spidey baby??? No thanks. I admit I never read many of the Spiderman comics when I was a kid, but did they actually have a baby at some point in time within the Spiderman universe?

They were going to, but then they lost the baby. Marvel has an alternate universe comic where the baby lived tho and became Spider-Girl.

Yep, MJ gave birth to a baby girl, May, but she was snatched away within moments of her birth by someone working for the Green Goblin. Sometime later, it was revealed that the baby was stillborn, but the Goblin wanted to mess with her parents' heads by leaving her fate up in the air.
