The star of the Spider-Man reboot is maybe one of these dudes

05.26.2010

Yes, Sony is really going through with their 3D reboot (3Dboot?) of Marvel's webslinger SPIDER-MAN, obviously trying to lure the lucrative TWILIGHT crowd by pushing it as "an angst-ridden tale of a teen dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though he had the power to stop it." (Right, because Spidey has always been known for his brooding.)

And who will be doing the sulking and surface-sticking? According to Heat Vision, the studio and director Marc Webb have narrowed it down to a few faces, some of which you might recognize.

Probably best known of the candidates is mussy-haired Brit Jamie Bell, most famous for BILLY ELLIOT, along with a mishmash of varying respectability that includes JUMPER, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, JANE EYRE and DEFIANCE. He's also the physical performance of Steven Spielberg's upcoming CG TINTIN. Bell is 24.

Next there's the previously mentioned Josh Hutcherson, who's been in FX-filled movies like JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH and Jon Favreau's underappreciated ZATHURA, plus BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. He shows up next in the RED DAWN remake. Hutcherson is 18.

Then there are the lesser-known quantities: 27-year-old Andrew Garfield (THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS), 19-year-old Frank Dillane (HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE) and 20-year-old Alden Ehrenreich (TETRO).

The studio wants to roll before the end of this year, so someone to fill the red-and-blue websuit should be officially announced in the next couple of months... like around the time of Comic Con. The movie is due in July 2012.

Extra Tidbit: So much for Logan Lerman, huh?

As much as I hate this stupid reboot idea, I know it will make lots of money just like that lame Twilight franchise because it would attract the same type of audiences.

Out of those choices I'd have to say Jamie Bell, even though he doesn't really look anything like Peter Parker, because he's the best actor of the bunch.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION IS

will he wear the spiderman suit at all? Probably it will be a big build-up to the moment he puts on the suit, this will be in the final frame and then you will hear the song; spiderman, spiderman...
I'm open to a new take on spiderman but fuck teenage origin twilight spiderman.

Well, Peter Parker actually did whine a LOT while talking to himself, from what I remember. So a little bit of emo/brooding is right for the character but should not be the defining trait.

With that said - why does Sony think we're interested in seeing the same exact story told from the beginning AGAIN after everything's already been established for us?

Will someone just do the right thing and give this fucking franchise back to Marvel already?

It's good that it was taken out of Raimi's hands--rumors of him wanting to do a "spider-baby" in the fourth film sounded awfully shitty.

This reboot doesn't sound great either, nor do any of these dudes look the part. They should give the franchise 10 years before a restart.

"an angst-ridden tale"?? really...the first 2 Spiderman movies were great, they basically captured the essence of the Spiderman comics perfectly....but no, we want to attract an audience that probably knows nothing about the source material...Hollywood studios truly are run by a bunch of money grubbing morons.

Hutcherson is the best of the list

And he fits what they're looking for. I mean seriously, why are they casting guys in their late 20's for a role of a teenager? Have they learned nothing from when Toby was playing Pete? By the time movie 3 comes around, the actor would be in his early 30's if that. Webb might as well cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Peter Parker/Spider-Man if he wants to go this route.

I think two guys that deserve it more than these actors is Logan Huffman from "V" and Anton Yelchin. Hell, Emile Hirsch

I don't know can't say I'm liking this reboot so far. Here's hoping they'll get either Ralph Fiennes or Christoph Waltz as Norman Osborne/Green Goblin.

I'm glad they are rebooting.

Spidey 3 was terrible, and Spidey 2 was good but had it's flaws(STOP KILLING RECURRING VILLAINS). Out of all these names, I think I'd prefer Logan Lerman, even though he's apparently not a contender. He looks more like Peter Parker than ANY of these other guys.

Just because it's a reboot doesn't automatically mean it'll be good. The third film was bad, but it didn't damage the franchise to the point where it was beyond salvation.

Andrew Garfield..

Although he doesn't show a massive amount of acting ability in Imaginarium, I saw him in a little flick called Boy A and I really enjoyed it and thought he did a terrific job as an actor. If he can pull off an American sounding accent, because he has an English accent it wouldn't really fit with a kid growing up in New York story.

I'll definitely agree that is completely unnecessary but Jamie Bell is an extremely underrated young actor. He's better than 98% of actors under 30. He's done some incredible work (see Mister Foe & Undertow) and doesn't even really need to do a Spiderman reboot. He's better than this but if he gets the part, at least it'll be known there'll be one redeeming quality about it.

This guy has no vanity or posturing qualities, unlike almost EVERY young American actor (see the atrociously bad

Jamie Bell is badass.

If he gets the role, I'll check this out for sure. Having said that, I hope he doesn't get it. He's too good to be in a rushed reboot like this.

BTW, Dave, just because it's described as an "angst-ridden tale of a teen dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though he had the power to stop it," that doesn't automatically mean it's being thrown soley at the Twilight crowd. You're probably right, but you shouldn't be so ballsy this early on by calling it "obvious."

Here's hoping bell passes on this. He doesn't need it at this point, and I wouldn't want to see him get stuck being remembered as Peter Parker. Some of these other actors are virtual unknowns otherwise, and it could be a huge break for them.

Much like Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bell doesn't need Spiderman at this point.

I hope this movie bombs. I really do. I just do not see anyone on this list that I would like for Spidey (maybe Bell). Look, I would have loved to see Spider-Man 4 and see the redemption it would of had from Spider-Man 3 but if they had to reboot the franchise, why couldn't they have gotten Peter out of school and made him an adult. We've already seen him in school dealing with his powers and grades/relationships.

EHRENREICH

Alden Ehrenreich might be an interesting choice.

He held his own against Vincent Gallo and Maribel Verdu in "Tetro," and I have no idea what he's doing.

I REALLY hope they don't sign Bell or Garfield, as both actors are a little old, and have already been proving themselves to be better than a second-rate Spider-Man (Maguire really was the right guy at the right time).

I want ANTON YELCHIN

Centering the story in H.S. is not a bad idea as most of the early stories took place their and they just kinda breezed right past that era in the first movie, But no Twilighty broody B.S. Peter alway's manages to keep his sense of humour even in the face of death, it's his defense mechanism kinda like Tony Stark being an cocky A'hole to mask his vulnerability's.

I didn't really mind Tobey to much although he was kinda bland, I thought he was OK in the first 2. But he's not funny and SPIDERMAN is alway's cracking wise in the comics. I'm most exited for a new MJ, hope they get someone hot this time.

The only reason Sony is rebooting is so they don't lose the rights for Spiderman back to Marvel. The good news is Marvel got the animated Spiderman rights back and are coming out with an Ultimate Spiderman cartoon in 2011.

I loved the first 2 of Sam's Spiderman movies, Just because you hit a roadblock on the 3rd movie doesn't mean you put down the horse. Just a shame!

i'd say to stop the hate but really what do i care...

i'm totally down for a Spiderman reboot.
it was going to happen no matter what.
lets not kid ourselves and like other people have stated before it's not the first time we get a reboot of a beloved character comic book inspired or otherwise.

but lets look at comic books since this is where this movie gets it's story from.
how many times has spiderman been rebooted or retconned in some way or another??
i don't know myself but I know enough to say that it sure as hell isn't something new to

ALL i want is that if it's to be done that it be done well.

you can debate spiderman 2 and even or even 1 all you want but part 3 has pretty much no redeeming qualities so for that alone i'd like another spiderman movie to kinda take erase that horrible movie experience.

in conclusion.
i'm actually kind of surprised at how many brit guys there are in that list of actors for this role but then again Christian Bale himself is welsh or something and he got the role of Bats.
