The star of the Spider-Man reboot is maybe one of these dudes

Yes, Sony is really going through with their 3D reboot (3Dboot?) of Marvel’s webslinger SPIDER-MAN, obviously trying to lure the lucrative TWILIGHT crowd by pushing it as “an angst-ridden tale of a teen dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though he had the power to stop it.” (Right, because Spidey has always been known for his brooding.)

And who will be doing the sulking and surface-sticking? According to Heat Vision, the studio and director Marc Webb have narrowed it down to a few faces, some of which you might recognize.

Probably best known of the candidates is mussy-haired Brit Jamie Bell, most famous for BILLY ELLIOT, along with a mishmash of varying respectability that includes JUMPER, FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, JANE EYRE and DEFIANCE. He’s also the physical performance of Steven Spielberg’s upcoming CG TINTIN. Bell is 24.

Next there’s the previously mentioned Josh Hutcherson, who’s been in FX-filled movies like JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH and Jon Favreau’s underappreciated ZATHURA, plus BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA. He shows up next in the RED DAWN remake. Hutcherson is 18.

Then there are the lesser-known quantities: 27-year-old Andrew Garfield (THE IMAGINARIUM OF DOCTOR PARNASSUS), 19-year-old Frank Dillane (HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE) and 20-year-old Alden Ehrenreich (TETRO).

The studio wants to roll before the end of this year, so someone to fill the red-and-blue websuit should be officially announced in the next couple of months… like around the time of Comic Con. The movie is due in July 2012.
