The trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger's The Last Stand explodes online!

Aug. 16, 2012by: Paul Shirey

He's back!  The first trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to leading man status in THE LAST STAND is here!  Since his last feature film in 2003, Schwarzenegger has popped in and out of films with cameo's, but this marks his reemergence as an action star, which seems to fit him like an old hat.  Directed by Kim Jee-Woon (I SAW THE DEVIL), the pic looks to be a riotous good time with some cheeky one liners and lots and lots of explosions.

Get back:

I'm more excited to see ol' Arnie back on the big screen than I anticipated and I think this is the perfect film for his return.  With a heavy slate of pics on his schedule already, he's showing no signs of wearing down, even if his aged appearance may indicate as much.  It's great to see Schwarzenegger embrace his age and roll with the next evolution of his career.

Welcome back, Arnold!

Here's the synopsis:

Action icon Arnold Schwarzenegger makes his much-anticipated return to the big screen in Korean director Kim Jee-woon's hard-hitting US directorial debut, THE LAST STAND. After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow.

Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Peter Stormare, Genesis Rodriguez, Jaimie Alexander, Harry Dean Stanton, Rodrigo Santoro, Eduardo Noriega, and Johnny Knoxville, THE LAST STAND hits theaters on January 18, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I'm not sure if it's Knoxville or the Sheriff aspect, but this is very reminiscent of The Rock's Walking Tall. Anyone else get that vibe?

Looks cool in terms of action, but why so many jokes? why is Knoxville shootin` everywhere looking like a character from Dumb & Dumber. Sly and Arnold should keep the jokes and the nostalgia to Expendables, and make serious thrillers. Anyway looks nice.

Yup

Arnold has done it again. The one liners and quips, the steely eyes, after all these years he didn't lose it. Just take my money already.

Love the trailer, although Johnny Knoxville's expression throughout it is absolutely absurd (as is the hat). Can't wait to be there opening night! Also, the Bullet to the Head trailer is out:

Suddenly feels like the 90's!

I think thats why all these action stars endure over the decades. Unlike so many in Hollywood, they embrace their age. Wear it like armor, battle scars. Arnie, Sly, Bruce, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Jet Li, Samuel L Jackson. Makes them relatable. Lovable.

Everyone everywhere could take a lesson.

Take a lesson? Both Stallone and Schwarzenegger don't embrace their age. Both have had cosmetic surgeries, just look at their unnatural faces. Now they're stuck between looks. Too old to be the cool dude and too artificially young to be the cool asskicking old guy.

Harrison Ford embraced his age, Clint Eastwood embraced his age, Tommy Lee Jones embraced his age, Donald Sutherland embraced his age. You know hat those guys have in common? They are old wrinkled white haired men. And they can

Those 90's action stars can't afford to grow old naturally. They still have to play the same ex special forces hero they did 20 years ago. Unlike the previous mentioned actors they aren't asked for anything else, so they need to cling on their image of action star.

I get more of a Rio Bravo vibe if anything. And that is a very, very good thing.

Too bad it doesn't come out until January, this is the type of movie I'd love to go see around Thanksgiving.

There was no need to have a sidekick like Knoxville providing comic relief, when you have the likes of Luis Guzman in the film. Arnold looks great though. Consider my ticket purchased.

Looks like fun. I have a few reservations. Arnie does seem old in this, and that worries me a bit. I'm also still a little worried about the director, as this will be his first Hollywood film. However, this does look like a lot of fun and it's good to see Arnie back in a leading role. I also like how they appear to take his age into account in the movie.

I wasn't sure how I was going to feel about Arnold's return to the action genre, but I'll be damned if I didn't get goosebumps watching that.

What a life that guy's had.

I totally got the "Walking Tall" vibe from it and that was before I even saw Knoxville pop up in the trailer. Then it was just weird. But hey, it's Arnold's big return as a lead so I have to see it.
