Tom Cruise officially signs on for Universal's Mummy reboot opening in 2017

01.21.2016

Universal Pictures seemed pretty gung-ho on relaunching its classic movie monsters before DRACULA UNTOLD was released. Since then, it's been a swirl of rumors. It looks as though they've had enough time to collect themselves and with the following news, it's full steam ahead on the next movie monster! Variety is reporting that Tom Cruise has officially signed on to play opposite Sofia Boutella in THE MUMMY. Boutella will be playing the titular monster with Alex Kurtzman (PEOPLE LIKE US) directing a script from Jon Spaihts (DOCTOR STRANGE, PROMETHEUS).

While the names behind the camera might be a cause for concern, Tom Cruise knows how to pick a project. Variety reports that Cruise isn't expected to produce, but does state that he has a hand in developing the project. Last we heard, the story followed a Navy Seal team on a mission to find a group of terrorists in a bunker, only to discover an ancient evil. No word yet if that plot will remain but the movie will take place in present day, unlike the Brendan Fraser flicks.

THE MUMMY is scheduled to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.

Are you excited for THE MUMMY now that Tom Cruise is on board?

Well, there goes any slim chance of it being a Mummy movie.

It is Tom Cruise, so I am automatically interested, yet that does not mean without reservations. I hope it is good, just because he is involved.

Tom, you've been on such a role, why reduce yourself to a reboot.

I'm guessing Tom Cruise will be playing a lead - an archaeologist who uncovers the Mummy's Tomb and only he can stop the havoc.

I never really cared for this franchise but i guess this will be the nearest we'll see Tom Cruise fight zombies since the genre is apparently missing from his resumé.

Frankenstien vs the wolfman, house of frankenstien, house of Dracula, abbott and costellello meet frankenstien and all the other monsters in several follow ups and the fun to watch assignment terror with paul nashy as the werewolf valdimar also Frankenstein against Dracula featuring chaney jr... monster squad ect...

You lost me at Prometheus writer. Also bad casting. What's he going to do, fight the mummy with Scientology?

I'm fine with it if Cruise is involved....

But whoever thinks this monster superhero team-up thing is a good idea needs to be fired and forced to clean toilets for the next couple of decades. There literally isn't a person on the planet who is dying to see a team of outdated monsters take on bad guys through some ridiculous shadowy government agency.

wait, that's what they're actually doing?! i thought it was just a shared universe. i haven't head about some shadowy government agency turning them into heroes. this is real? i was expecting some crossover crap like dracula vs mummy vs wolfman with humans caught in the middle. like what legendary is doing with the monsters.

Monster movie shared universe just feels so forced... At least so far

I dont know, maybe the studio will prove me wrong and make spectacular monster movies that make loads of cash, but this feels like a lazy attempt at capitalizing on the shared universe concept created by Marvel. Even if the Mummy movie succeeds with Tom Cruise, which is a big if, these movies are going to have to be top notch to bring in audiences. People havent exactly been rushing in to see the latest Dracula and Frankenstein type movies.

it makes sense to me. i mean, Universal monsters are... well... universal. there is potential. and they were the first to do the shared universe thing back in the 40's. if any group of non-comic book characters got a shared universe today, these guys make the most sense. the mentality of "we shouldn't do something because people haven't been rushing to see it" is exactly how you get generic same-crap-we[link] type of stuff.

This is actually the first time I heard the premise. That sounds atrocious. It's not even the modern setting that has me bothered, but if he's part of some SEAL team, no thanks. He could play the hell out of an archeologist though.

The only thing wrong with Dracula Untold is that it was supposed to be a Dracula movie. As a period horror adventure it was better than expected.

Every actor makes mistakes. This will be one of Cruises biggest.

A modern day Military vs Mummy movie? That sounds horrible. Dracula Untold was a bomb and did aboslutely everything wrong. It was forced, rushed and a waste of time for setting up this universe. How many times will Universal fail before the hopefully give up? It started with Wolfman, that bombed, then they waited a few years, did DU, that sucked (pun intended), and now they are getting Tom to be in their shitty mummy movie. We know it's going to blow, how does Tom not see that? Is he just bored

This is awesome news. Anything Cruise lends his talent and time to is worth watching and paying attention for. And considering it's Cruise, I'm assuming he'll be the 'Tony Stark' of this shared monster universe.

My question is if this is the first film to set up the shared iconic horror movie universe or if it's the second behind Dracula Untold?

I hear Dracula Untold bombed so hard this will be the starting point. They are going to keep trying until they either fail so hard they go out of business, or actually make money and a decent movie. Both scenarios are extremely unlikely.

I can't agree about Cruise's time (Scientology), but film wise, I do agree. It sounds weird but tom cruise action movie is really enough for me

Don't know how I feel about this

With the casting of Cruise, it makes me think Universal won't be approaching the material with a foucs on horror. Cruise has a habit of just running in all his films, so this will likely be like the Brendan Fraser films.

Universal has stated countless times that these are NOT horror movies. They are all going the action route. So we already know there won't be any horror elements.

Its the way Cruise runs, audiences can't get enough. Also, we've seen him run from explosions, buildings collapsing, and sandstorms, but have we ever seen him run from a Mummy. I can just hear the ca-ching sounds going off in studio exec heads.
