Tom Rothman has some strong words for critics of Paul Feig's Ghostbusters

11.20.2015

Unless you've been living under a rock you're likely aware of the enormous amount of backlash that Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS has been receiving since day one. While some people have legitimate concerns that have to do with the remaking of a film they love, others seem to be going out of their way to simply hurl awful sexist insults at everyone involved. Sony Pictures head Tom Rothman spoke at the Paley International Council in New York and he had some strong words for the people who've been bashing the film.

Everybody says we're making the female Ghostbusters, but I say, 'No, we're making the funny Ghostbusters.' Yes, it happens to be four women, It's original. You get pissing and moaning on the Internet — sexist comments – but, you know, f— 'em. Do it or die, because the audience is diverse. I got the old Jewish guys covered.

This isn't the first time that someone involved with the production of GHOSTBUSTERS has told people to f**k off, Paul Feig told one rather angry GHOSTBUSTERS fan to "go f**k yourself" several months ago. As we've yet to have seen any footage from the film, nor have a clear understanding of what it's all about (beyond ghostbusting I assume), I'd imagine that Paul Feig and company are hoping that the outspoken critics would just take a step back and wait to see what he's got in store for us, but it's clear everyone involved is getting a little fed up. It's entirely possible that we've got a fun entry in the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise to look forward to, but even if it falls short, it's not the end of the world, just speak with your wallet and go watch the original instead.

GHOSTBUSTERS is set for a July 22, 2016 release.

Personally, I have no issue with an all-female cast Ghostbusters. I just wish they'd have made this set in the same world as the previous two rather than doing a remake with all females.

Misogyny this, sexism that, blah, blah, blah...

I suppose they're setting it up to blame it all on us when this turd turns out to be just as good and successful as Blues Brothers 2000.

Whats really funny about this is the 'original' idea to use women. Yet, judging by the photo, They all seem to personify there male predecessors. Or am I wrong? Starting from left Winston, Ray , Pete , Egon

Those involved in the making of this film are getting tetchy because they know the truth deep down themselves that this is a crappy idea. Truth hurts eh Hollywood?
And this won't be the first or last film to feel the wrath of the web, think of sites like this as the barometer of truth when it comes to public opinion and the crap films you attempt to throw at us.

So this is the marketing campaign for this film? Claiming faux outrage, sexism and telling people to fuck off every two weeks because people don't like the idea of their movie?
What a bunch of twats.

I have never heard studio heads and directors use such strong language to defend a movie....I have a feeling that they know its not going to do very well at the box office but their outbursts don't help matters. Just makes us dislike the idea even more.....

I'm all for giving this movie a chance if the reviews are solid and audience reaction is of general surprise. However, I'm inclined not to give it a shot because everybody behind camera is telling people to fuck off because of genuine concern. When the fuck is Feig and company going to realize it has shit to do with the fact the cast is made up of women? Sure I have doubts about about McCarthy because the Heat was not good and so far that has been the only thing I have seen her in so I am

Sure I have doubts about about McCarthy because the Heat was not good and so far that has been the only thing I have seen her in so I am willing to give her a shot if this movie appears to be decent. I have an undying love for Kirsten Wiig though, I don't any thing about the other two women. My doubts for this project lay with in Feig and the production team. I'm worried they were wrapped up in the novelty of an all female cast and Feig's relentlentless pursuit to prove women are funny (which they are, he needs to quit trying so goddamn hard and shoving it down our throats). I'm worried they were so pre-occupied with thinking they had such a cool-novel idea of having four female leads that they forgot to make a good movie. I'm also worried about the seemingly directionless pre-production, it seemed like Dan Aykroyd just had diarrhea of the mouth when it came to his ideas. With that being said I say "fuck you" to Tom Rothman and Feig for being pompous douchbags, not paying attention to general concerns of the fans who are the reason why Ghostbusters is such a marketable property and just insulting us every goddamn fucking time they are interviewed.

I would think though, that they're not telling people like you to fuck off, or anyone else who simply hates the idea of remakes or reboots on classics such as Ghostbusters, but those who are openly sexist and misogynistic towards the project. If I'm remembering this correctly, the guy Feig was sparring with on twitter most likely was sexist in his criticisms towards the film, and Feig didn't resort to the infamous "go fuck yourself" line until he was pushed there after several infuriating

I would hope they're mature enough to accept plain old negative and warranted criticism if the film simply isn't good, but that time hasn't come yet. They're dealing with unwarranted sexism and misogyny ontop of all the very general and usual skepticism that comes with making a reboot on a classic. It's enough to push anyone over the edge, I think.

I'm sure most of what they're saying is geared towards the sexist/ misogynist but it does feel like they are lashing out at more than just the people making those types of comments. It seems like they are getting pissy about every little criticism that is being said towards this movie and blaming all of it on sexism and misogony. Which for most fans on the internet is just simply not true. Most people are just concerned with them making a good movie and not tarnishing the brand of Ghosbusters.

I'm not anti-remake- reboot= sequel or whatever other term they throw around when it is done properly. My growing criticism for this production crew is that I am not convinced they are sure what made the original so magical.

I hope you're right about most critics not being sexist/misogynists because thousands of Americans just freaked out about the design of a Starbucks coffee cup, which to me indicates that many of us in America don't exactly have our heads on/priorities straight. I want to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I can't anymore when people here are actually considering the possibility of Trump being the next president.

I haven't read anyone make openly sexist and misogynistic towards the project.

I've only seen hand-wringers complain about openly sexist and misogynistic towards the project that no one actually seems to be making.

It's a response to a controversy that doesn't exist. Like the imaginary outrage over the black stormtrooper that never happened.

If that is original then we all could be directors just remake everything and ad women and tweak the look a little. Come on with this shit! I can't get over the crappy car, costumes and the stupid cartoon egon looking chick I hope this movie flops but you know it won't and it will just spawn a sequel. I for one don't want to sit there for two hours

Wiig is really the only person I like and I still don't want to see her play a Ghostbuster. Call me a sexist but I see it as being a purist when it comes to something like this. Its like taking Jaws and making all the leads female? Why? because you can or you want to feel politically correct, modern, and hip and then tell everyone to fuck off if they don't like it? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Sorry about the rant, this shit pisses me off

In your own words "No, no, no, sir, Fuck you!" How can you even comment on this movie before the first second of footage is released? Did you see the production? Did you see the script? Obviously not. And hammering a movie remake simply because it's being done with an all-female cast smacks of the grossest misogynistic bullshit since Andrew Dice Clay.

Do the civilized world a favor: GO FUCK YOURSELF. RIGHT NOW. WITH A BROKEN BROOM HANDLE. VIGOROUSLY. Get the fuck off the internet

Jesus Christ, take your Tampon out Paul Feig. See, this is why people can't state opinions on the internet. Some douche nozzle always has to start running off at the mouth (or keyboard). I said I didn't like an all female Ghostbuster cast and all of a sudden I must hate all women. I enjoy many movies with strong female leads, I just prefer a Ghostbuster movie to not be Bridesmaids 2 with proton packs. I even liked Bridesmaids. I also said "How about let the movie speak for itself?" Which means

I also said "How about let the movie speak for itself?" Which means I will more than likely give it a chance. If its good, I will admit it. That doesn't change the fact that I still would have preferred the old cast back or even, god for bid, an all male cast. You can take that any way you want cupcake.

If the original Ghostbuster never existed and they made this movie, I wouldn't be pissed. I would have never see Bill Murray play Dr. Peter Venkman or Aykroyd play Raymond Stantz. I would see the new Ghostbusters with fresh eyes and make my judgment about it. But its not something new, its a remake of one of the greatest classics of my generation. Yeah, I'm pissed when someone comes in and shits all over it because he wants to be PC or make some kinda statement.

Also, I'm not even going to get into the other bullshit you vomited out your mouth since apparently the only way for you to have a intelligent conversation, is to act like a internet tough guy.

Edit: And whats wrong with Andrew Dice Clay? The Adventures of Ford Fairlane is great

Warhorse makes some deeply stupid comments.

It's entirely possible to comment on the concept of a movie without seeing the final cut. All over the internet, people are now well practiced in comparing concepts and pre-production material with the final product.

What does this remedial concept have to be repeated so many times?

The likelihood of it being better than the original film... I don't think anyone's expecting that outcome, are they? That accepted, what's the point? This would have to get amazing reviews for me to even think about seeing it at the cinema. I actually believe a brilliant reboot of Ghostbusters is possible, but this just doesn't feel like that.

Give it a chance

What a bunch of whiny man-children. You are all acting like it's going to be terrible, and is going to flop at the box office. You have no idea of it will be good (the track record of those involved is pretty solid). I hope this is a hit, just to watch all of you people have a meltdown over a them making a sequel.

I am fucking sick of how they are spinning the criticism for remaking a great MODERN classic into a warped & twisted feminist movement. I don't give a shit who is playing the Ghostbusters, remaking this is like remaking Jaws or Memento or Robocop. It is bullshit, the criticism here is about leach-like filmmakers stealing the success, creativity, and hard work of others and slapping their name on it.

On second thought, the producers and people behind this are pissing their pants...

The people behind this movie are crying because the last time there was this big of a meltdown between fans and film makers was Fantastic Four and look how well that pile of shit landed. It splattered all the way to making ZERO money and getting a 10% on RT. TEN FUCKING PERCENT. So these assholes might want to stop whatever production they are doing because this smells just as bad as F4 did.

This asshat just doesn't get it

We don't care that it's all females, its THE FEMALES that were chosen to be in this movie. Nobody likes these SNL rejects and Melissa McCarthy's 15 minutes of fame has been up since Tammy. This just screams mediocre. Then to get some of the original cast back in stupid taxi cameos playing different people SUCKS.

I don't mind seeing the originals replaced with female Ghostbusters. It supposes to be natural, not like this. So far it feels like Female Ghostbusters are the unique selling point of this remake. If they don't want people to complain much, they should have released some official behind the scene clips, quick teaser trailer to convince us otherwise.

Ofcourse they want the fans to shut up. Not because the movie is necessarily good. But because it is getting bad press before the release of the movie which would also mean the studio stands to lose a lot of money (real reason).

See, it's comments like this that takes fans hopes away from this being a successful film. We've seen next to nothing so there is a lot of secrecy. If Josh Tranks F4 should teach the GB team, it's this. They didn't promote F4 until at most 2 months before release, which includes behind the scenes pics. The leaked pics we DID get to see were questionable or "wtf is that?" and the rumours of "we aren't making a comic book movie" also didn't jive with fans.
Enough with the "all female cast is the issue" bs. It's not that all women cast that bothers me, it's the cast. Wiig is fine, I dislike Mccarthy and I honestly don't know much about the other two but I don't hear good things about them. If the trailer proves worthwhile and word of mouth appears decent enough, I'll see it without bias. Right now, with the similar concerns fans had with F4, we are skeptical. Telling us to fuck off isn't gonna get us in the seats either.
Also, if you want originality, don't make a movie based off an already existing concept.

What Feig and Rothman don't get is that it doesn't very well matter what they say. I plan on seeing this movie, and my friends also want to see it because they are fans of the people in it (some of them have actually had the privilege of improvising with Neil Casey, who's playing the villain). But a lot of people don't want to see it. Nothing short of a truly kick-ass trailer will change anyone's mind at this point. And just saying fuck 'em, while constructive to do in private, does absolutely

"Everybody says we're making the female Ghostbusters, but I say, 'No, we're making the funny Ghostbusters.'"

I'm guessing this was intended as a defense of their actors, but it comes off as more of a dig at the original movie. Also, fuck Tom Rothman.

This coming from the guy who turned Galactus into a cloud, greenlit 'AVP' & was 100% fully responsible for everything in "X-Men: Origins - Wolverine"?

I have no strong (or bad) words towards the Ghostbusters reboot...HOWEVER...

I keep no calm when it concerns any involvement of the dishonest, asinine & ignorant assclown movie executive, Tom Rothman. Seriously...this guy could give Jon Peters (the bat - shit crazy, giant spider obsessed "Superman Lives" producer) a run for his money!

This festering pile of duplicitous horseshit. (Rothman, not the movie) is single handedly responsible for some of the biggest blunders & embarrassments

This festering pile of duplicitous horseshit. (Rothman, not the movie) is single handedly responsible for some of the biggest blunders & embarrassments towards fans when he worked for of Fox Filmed Entertainment back in the 2000's.

1. Editing "Die Hard 4" to make it a PG-13 film even though the previous three, had been R-rated. This pretty much meant that Bruce Willis couldn't say John McClane's trademark "Yippie-ki-yay, Mother Fucker!" line as it was fully intended.

2. The mismanagement of "X-Men 3".
Not waiting for Bryan Singer to finish working on "Superman Returns" or having a replacement director until weeks before filming was due to start. Seemingly rushing the production as means of retaliating against Singer & hoping to release "The Last Stand" before "Superman Returns" (both in the summer of 2006). Same goes for actors James Marsden, Rebecca Romjin, and Anna Paquin. Rothman refused to let them take care of prior engagements before filming & because of this...their characters were "killed off" or screen time cut severely as a matter of convenience.

Rothman also allegedly didn't want Sentinels (the gigantic, mutant hunting robots) appearing in an X-Men film because he believed that audiences would immediately think that giant robots appearing in live-action would be too "silly". This was of course, before "Transformers" (a movie for which Tom Rothman allegedly turned down) came out.

3. X-Men: Origins - Wolverine: Everything in that movie was him. He had 100% direct exec. power over Gavin Hood's direction (& subsequent firing) & David Benioff's script.

4. Ordering Ridley Scott to edit his movie "Kingdom of Heaven" to make it look like a more formulaic action-adventure film, when Scott intended for it to be much deeper.

5. Having "Daredevil" edited to make it appear more like a summer blockbuster (i.e. more CGI) in the mode of "Spider-Man". "Daredevil" was initially conceived as a more violent, R-rated film in the mold of Frank Miller's run with the comics.

6. Not giving the "Fantastic Four" films a better budget, directly ordering Tim Story to aim for a campy, cookie-cutter, sitcomy feel. It was also Rothman's idea that Galactus be turned into a cloud.

7. Green lighted "AVP". Told James Cameron and Ridley Scott to "Fuck off" after he was approached by the duo w/ an idea for "Alien 5".

8. Made life hell for everyone involved in Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes" remake. i.e. on set tantrums, rushed into production, etc, Which eventually resulted in Burton's comment "I'd rather jump out of a window than do Planet of the Apes 2."

SONY Pictures, please promise us movie fans that you'll keep an eye on this Soulless Cock Mongler?

Thanks for taking the time to write this post. Brilliant! It's always great to be reminded of Tom Rothman's "accomplishments." What an ass-clown.

Full disclosure: I'm looking forward to the movie, no ill feelings toward it. But please stop putting that picture of Paul Feig! He looks like such a douche!

when you need Tom Rothman to defend your movie, you know you're in trouble.

Changing genders isn't original, twat. Neither is a remake. You know what'll shut people up? A good movie.
