EPISODE 10: The Winds of Winter

THE PLOT : Winter is coming, and with it, the white walkers. If those still standing don't band together soon, the iron throne may become a throne of ice.

THE LOWDOWN: (The following column contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don't recommend reading this if you haven't watched this episode). Let me start by saying this is one of the better finale’s of the series, and not just because huge plot points are finally moving forward, but in general. I knew big things were going to happen tonight, but the events in King’s Landing blew me away (sorry, had to). The High Sparrow wasn’t going to survive the night, I knew that much, but Tommen going out like a pussy? I didn’t see that coming, and I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. I won’t miss him, he was a bitch to be sure, and the deaths of all Cersei’s children was prophesized, but still…it just felt a little weak. What a night for Cersei though, revenge on all sides, and MAN was she eating it up! And after everything, to see her crowned on the Iron Throne? D-A-M-N. Jaime’s reaction didn’t seem all that positive, but I’m sure he’ll get over it.

The biggest wild card tonight was Arya. Holy hell was that some epic payback. Lord Frey needed to die, and for a while there, I thought Jaime might be the one to do it. I think he wanted to, but ‘politically speaking’ just wasn’t ready to add that death to his tab. Arya being there, for the feast, silently stalking them, then serving up his sons before slitting his throat was bloody horrific, and I couldn’t stop laughing. It was so sweet. I do have a thought though, if she refused the Many Faced God, why in hell was she able to use the face swapping tactic? Last time she pulled that shit, she went blind. This time? No problem. I mean, it’s all well and good that Jaqen has a soft spot for her, and thus didn’t mind her taking off, but that shouldn’t change the Godly rules of the game. I’m not complaining though, it’s good to see nearly three seasons’ worth of training not be for nothing.

The Jon Snow front was epically fantastic tonight, I mean damn, where the hell do I begin? First off, the rallying of all the bannermen was awesome, a recreating of the final episode of the season one. I loved it. But the biggest Jon Snow enigma finally got put to bed tonight—Jon Snow is really Jon Targaryen. How f*cking awesome is that?! No wonder maester Aemon liked him so much. Of course, only Bran knows the truth at this point, wouldn’t that suck to see him die before he gets to tell Jon? On that note, I was a little disappointed that Bran and Benjen didn’t show up in Winterfell. How cool would it have been to have them knocking on the door as everyone was chanting “KING IN THE NORTH”? I would’ve lost it. And then there’s Melisandre. In light of all the action last week, I didn’t touch upon the brooding (sulking) demeanor of hers, but for a chick who brought someone back to life, she isn’t very chipper. Banished though? I mean, I get that Davos is pissed, but I thought they were going to “live and let live” when it came to past transgressions. Guess not. I suppose she’ll meet up with Baric’s crew next season.

GAME OF THRONES SEASON 6’s finale was as satisfying as a finale can be, especially when it comes to this show. Winter has come, and guess what else is coming? Dany and her dragons…finally. Seeing her fleet raging across the sea was a magnificent sight. I didn’t care for the whole Daario bit at all, but I did enjoy Dany crowning Tyrion “Hand of the Queen”. I was taken off guard by Lady Tyrell’s secret meeting in Dorne, and even more so by the sudden appearance of Varys—he sure does move fast though, jumping from Dorne back to Meereen in time to sail with Dany and the crew. For all Cersei’s glory tonight, she’s amassed quite the number of enemies. Something tells me her reign won’t be a long one. I was expecting some white walker action, but alas there was none to be had. I’m assuming they’ll make their move in next season’s first episode, but that’s so far away…so very far away.

SEX/NUDITY: Not much to see on that front, but that’s okay, it’s not all about boobs ya know.

VIOLENCE: Cersei vaporized a lot of people tonight, like, a lot of people. There was also some throat slashing, some torture, some people pie, pregnancy blood (gross) and a lot of stabbing.

MOST EPIC SCENE: I really enjoyed the cloak and dagger games the children were playing in King’s Landing. Seeing Lancel get it was great, but nothing can top that slimy bastard Pycelle finally getting his due.

FINAL VERDICT :

TELL US WHAT YOU THOUGHT OF THIS EPISODE BELOW!

Extra Tidbit: Winter has come, and the great war is upon us.

It was alright. Too much teleporting.

Tommen lived for Margory. That's why he united the church with the kingdom, because of his love for her. Knowing that she's dead, he had nothing to live for. It's just a broken heart. Also, he wasn't "bred" or raised to be a king and handle the responsibility. Jaime and Cersei always talk about his lovely heart and kindness, but also know he doesn't have the gumption to be a good king. He knew it, too. With nothing to love or live for, he decided it wasn't worth living.

As for the other stuff... no surprises whatsoever. Which is fine. It's at the point now where the story is going to be giving resolutions and "payoffs" versus buildup and surprises. I'm sure there are more surprises to come.
So... Bran ends up near the wall again rather quickly. Granted, it was five episodes later, so that's possibly justified, BUT.... uhm, how did they escape the running army of the undead?!?!?!?! Just hop on Coldhands' horse and ride off, eh? Wow, that was easy.
Jaime is at the Frey's, and then he's suddenly back in time to see Cersei take the throne?!
Varys goes to meet the Queen of Thorns and scheme some shit, but then he's ALSO on Daeny's ship at the final scene, riding off across the sea? Damn. Maybe they are all riding dragons now.
Overall, the episode was alright.

I think your interpretation is incorrect. I think Tommen knew he screwed up and mommy was going to fuck him up. The actor didn't play/look sad at all, he was frightened.

You could be right.
Hey, we could also BOTH be wrong. One reviewer states "Tommen got tired of all the plot holes and decides he wants out." LOL
He never did learn how to master "King's Landing", did he?

Bang on, this was a great finale and to agree with some of the previous posts, one of the best GOT episodes yet. You're right about stuff being tied up being a reason, but it still ended on a high note. Tommen is a pussy if he's going to commit suicide over that. So he lost Margaery, it's not like they spent much time together or had any kind of chemistry. It was a political marriage. Grow a pair, kid.

I think it was more than losing Margaery. Cersei undermining his authority as King and actually having him forcibly brought home would be a humiliation hard to overcome. I'm not saying he was a strong person, because he wasn't, but he didn't have the temperment and maturity to deal with all the shit he had to.

It's not just losing his wife. He lost everything: the Sept was destroyed along with the High Sparrow, the man he'd put his faith in (literally), so his entire spiritual life was torn away. And he realized that he'd always be under his mother's thumb, because frankly he's a weak willed kid. He had nothing left and knew he'd be forced to marry again to continue the line. He could have run away or ended it all, and he chose the quick way out. Only someone like yourself could see that as being a

Tommen was not a leader and was easily led. I see him as an innocent, being pulled in all directions and not having the strength or courage to stand up. He was placed into a position he wasn't able to handle. His death had to happen, but I feel sorry for him.

Wow I didn't realize he was supposed to be even younger than this actor is (haven't read the books). Makes even more sense, as even the age they have him in the show is very young to shoulder such responsibility and have to make those types of decisions he had thrust upon him, let alone a younger child. Not everybody can be a Lyanna Mormont.

Gotta agree with Otterhead. Been visiting this site for about 10 years, frequented the forums pretty heavily and it actually disappoints me to see writing like this on here. "goingout like a pussy?" Seriously? This site has always been aimed at movie fans, your average Joe Schmoe, hence why we're schmoes, but c'mon now, that's poor writing, not for vulgarity or anything, it just seems like something I would've read on the imdb message boards, not on one of the biggest and best film sites out

Will continue to visit the site everyday like I have been for years, but hope to see a bit of better writing than what was displayed here. Also second note, I read your GOT reviews every week and usually enjoy them.

Disagree. First, Tommen IS a pussy, and second, this was the reviewer's opinion, so who cares how they express it. This guy writes all the GOT stuff for the site, meaning he's been doing it for the past five seasons, so if you're still reading his reviews at this point, you shouldn't have anything to say about the writing. Besides, have you ever read one of the arrow's reviews? He writes the exact same way, and he's co-founder of the site.

@SnakeEyesOwens Yes it's his opinion, but with a site of this level I expect the writer to articulate their opinions a bit more professionally or articulated a bit better than something like that. Also yes I love John Fallon's reviews, he's probably my go to horror film critic next to Scott Weinberg, he doesn't write that way. I dig his reviews yes, but some of the stuff seems out of place. I'm just saying how I feel as a fan of the site and this column.

I've been visiting this site for over 10 years. Joblo is still great but soo disappointing anymore. 75% of the articles are about hotties. Nothing wrong with a article or two per day but really it is almost all of them. Then you have writing like above, I don't care if the curse, I curse... all the time! The inaccuracies is what disappoints me. I read every GOT, TWD, and several other reviews weekly and this becoming quite common. Movie reviews are still top notch and the only ones I read

You're wrong about Jamie

Jamie is FAR from fine with everything. Cersei killed his uncle and her actions led to Tommen's suicide. Then she passed him over to appoint a different Hand (ironic) to the Queen.

Jamie and her are going to but heads, he will side with Danerys eventually to atone for being the 'kingslayer'. It seemed pretty obvious. This will reunite him with Tyrion and they will make peace, Bron will now be back with Tyrion as well. Jamie will be part of the Queensguard.

Agree, the reason he killed Aerys Targaryen in the first place was to protect the innocent from wildfire. And now his sister executes the Mad king's plan anyway. I think it's the end of their relationship.

Not Jon Targaryen

unless rhaegar and lyanna were married then he is still a bastard and is Jon Waters instead of Snow. and even if they did have a marriage ceremony rhaegar was already married to someone else so im not sure if that would count either

He was born in Dorne. So technically he'd be Jon Sand. Also Lyanna whispers "His name is ___" so even Jon isn't even his real name. Plus the original Aegon the Conqueror was married to two women at the same time.

its not a secret that he was born in the south, his name is snow because his supposed father is from the north, because of his real father is from the red keep he would be waters. the 2 argon was married too were also his sisters and we know from the bannisters that is no longer accepted so we don't know that polygamy is accepted anymore either, as there are no current examples i think its safe to assume that it is not

One of the best episodes in GoT history.

"seeing as how Loras and Margaery die in the books, their deaths didnít come as a huge surprise either"

I have no idea where you're getting this from, unless you've somehow read The Winds Of Winter before the rest of us. Loras was injured during the battle for Dragonstone and Margaery is still awaiting her trial, but both Tyrells are very much alive at the end of A Dance With Dragons. To me, Margaery's death in this episode was one of the most shocking in the show's history. (I'm a book

I thought she had more plans and a bigger part in the game to play before the end. Guess I was wrong. RIP.

I haven't felt so much watching a tv episode since Lost ended. I rewound Arya's revenge 3 times. After watching that almost $200 mil turd Independence day and feeling nothing but bored, and then being taken on this ride its so clear that its all in the writing. Great story trumps spectacle

Not really a stretch but im guessing Jon and Dany will be married by end of season 7, since Jon now has the legal claim to the Iron Throne, and they will take on the white walkers in season 8.

I don't know if I have ever been more satisfied with a season finale. Everything was so fantastic. I have nothing to complain about, except maybe Sam's story having no real value, but I like Sam so it can be forgiven. But let's talk about Dany's army: 3 houses rallying behind her, 2 armies, dragons, and probably the world's best fleet of ships. How the heck will anyone compete with that? I kind of hope it won't be that easy for her, but I honestly am not sure what could compete against an army
