Usually the best predictor of Oscar success, the Producers Guild names nominees

01.04.2011

The Producers Guild Awards are usually very good at forecasting who will be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (as for who will win, that hasn't always been as accurate). The PGA released their list of nominees for Best Picture and it looks very much like what you can expect when the Oscars announce their nominees. The only real surprise here is that Ben Affleck's THE TOWN squeaked in, likely edging out either WINTER'S BONE or RABBIT HOLE. Here are the film nominees:

127 HOURS
BLACK SWAN
INCEPTION
THE FIGHTER
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
THE KING’S SPEECH
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
THE TOWN
TOY STORY 3
TRUE GRIT

It's unfortunate that we are at the point with Oscar campaigning that we basically know who is going to be nominated before the nominations are announced. It takes a lot of the surprise and fun out of the Oscars but at least this year we have a really solid crop of films in the Top 10 (KIDS is the only film I disagree with but that's neither here nor there).

Now let's just say for a second that these were the Oscar nominees: who do you vote for for Best Picture?

Extra Tidbit: 11 of the last 16 PGA winners have gone on to win the Oscar.

I'm happy with the nominations. All of those movies deserve recognition. Glad to see Toy Story 3, The Kids Are All Right, Inception, and especially The Town all on the list. All fantastic movies.

Still need to see Fighter, True Grit, and King's Speech, but all the other films are great and deserving of the award (although my favorites are Toy Story 3, followed by Inception and Social Network). I'm glad that my favorites for 2010 are getting recognized, because last year great movies like The Road and Where the Wild things are got overlooked for the overrated nominees like Avatar and Hurt Locker.

It's like playing a game of what doesn't belong. The Town? Why is everyone so hung up on this movie? Sure, it was fun, but pales in comparison to films that it borrows heavily from.

I'm disappointed they didn't open 127 hours wide or the King's speech.
Franco for actor is an easy one. I mean he played a guy who cut off his arm and he acted without dialogue for a period of time. King's speech is probably an interesting movie, but it is such the stereotypical movie that wins awards. The plot kind of sounds boring to me. I would like to see the created efforts and imagination behind fictional movie like inception or toy story 3 win. Yea, they are fiction, but it takes a

Yeah I have to say that the spot The Kids are All Right took should really have gone to Winter's Bone. TKAAR was pretty good, but Winter's Bone was fantastic. Otherwise, great list.

Glad 127 Hours and The Town weren't overlooked again. Still need to see the social network, can't wait to see it next week when the DVD comes out.

Best Picture

Social Network was byfar the best film of the year followed by True Grit which I think is one of the Coen Brother's better films. Where's Blue Valentine though I thought that movie was trmendous and a definate Best Picture nomination..

Blue Valentine is getting slept on like no other film this year. Quite a shame, considering it contains the two best performances in years.

I predict..

Hinestly I would Love to See Black Swan or The Social Network win Best Picture i think that its going to be The Kings Speech. The Fighter doesn't stand a chance Toy Story 3 has a better chance then that film.
Lets wait and see Ebert's Predictions.

Here are Mine for now at least...
Actor- Colin Firth (thats an easy one)
Actress- Natalie Portman( again another easy one she was so amazing in Black Swan)
Supporting Actor- Christian Bale
Supporting Actress- Mila Kunis
Director-

Great List

Out of that I still haven't seen The Kids are All Right, 127 Hours, The Social network or The Fighter.. but everything I've heard about them is overwhelmingly positive (except for Kids.. it's 70/30).

I think we need to bump up the Oscars so it doesn't feel like we're going through the motions.

And the winner is...

The King's Speech
That's who will win. But if it were up to me, The Fighter would take it. Awesome.

I'm very happy with the turnout of films this year because to be honest I would be happy if a number of those films were to win. Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, Social Network, and Toy Story 3 were all some of my favorites and they are all nominated this year. If i had to pick a favorite though I think I'd go with The Social Network. Everything came together with that film the best in my opinion.

I want Black Swan to take it

It's lists like these that make me realize "You know? 2010 WAS a really good year for movies." Both 127 Hours and Inception really had me pulled in as well. Honestly, as long as the people from each movie gets the credit they deserve, I won't be TOO disappointed on who wins the actual award (yeah I know, I'm being so laid-back this is barely a comment, haha).

Pretty much agree with all of your picks except Social Network will have to win for Adapted Screenplay not original, it was adapted from the book Accidental Billionaires. Other than that your list is spot on.

You're right. I forgot about that. I think Director is a toss up between Fincher and Russell. I am kind of pulling for Tom Hooper because I thought The King's Speech was a great movie.

Of these 10, my favorite is easily Toy Story 3, followed by Black Swan and The Social Network. I would be okay if any of them took home the PGA award or the Oscar.

The Social Network for best picture. I'm glad it's the frontrunner: it's my favorite movie of the year, so for the first time since Lord of the Rings the Academy might actually award what is actually the best film of the year. Other nominees are solid. The Town is a surprise; I would have liked to see Rabbit Hole.

What's crazy is that usually there is some indication of what will win. Last year everyone had their sights on The Hurt Locker, but this year it seems like it's anyones game. Personally, I think Christopher, David, and Darren are all long overdo for an Oscar so I'd be perfectly happy if anyone of them walked away with the award(s).

Anyone's game? The Social Network and Fincher are the clear favorites. Right now it seems like only supporting actress might be a close race.

inception

although this ten is more complete than last years 10i felt that hurt locker avatar and basterds has a shot with precious and up in the air as dark horses talthough i liked district 9 the filoms felt like filler

the base ball hall of fame can indudct up to 10 players(never happens) but they dont give ten every year if theres only 7 fiolms worthy only have 7 noms

set a min of 5(for continuity for the other awards) and a max of 10

Inception...

...should win it. I really admire chris nolan's style of filmmaking and storytelling.

I'd be cool with toy story 3. Have yet to see the fighter, I can't stand mark walhberg's generic acting.

No Winter's Bone is just wrong. The film was far better than Inception, The Kid's are All Right, and especially True Grit which was awful. I have a feeling that Bone will get a best picture nomination from the academy despite its snub here.
