Warner Bros: Fantastic Beasts to be trilogy; DC movie announcement coming

Mar. 31, 2014by: Paul Shirey

Recently, The New York Times sat down with Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara who discussed his plans for the company moving forward. Some of those plans include the new film series from Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, the success and follow-up sequels to THE LEGO MOVIE, and the current state of DC comics superheroes on both the big and small screen. Check out the highlights from the interview below that discuss the details of some of these big projects on the horizon.

Details on J.K. Rowling's new film series (which will apparently be a trilogy now):

"...Warner announced that Ms. Rowling had agreed to adapt for the big screen her “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” a 2001 book billed as one of Harry Potter’s Hogwarts textbooks. Three megamovies are planned. The main character will be a “magizoologist” named Newt Scamander. The stories, neither prequels or sequels, will start in New York about seven decades before the arrival of Mr. Potter and his pals."

On the future of the LEGO franchise (which has "multiple" sequels in the works):

"Mr. Tsujihara noted recent progress on both of those fronts. Dan Lin, a Warner-based producer, is working on multiple sequels to “The Lego Movie,” which became a surprise blockbuster last month. (Mr. Tsujihara was directly responsible, having bought a company that makes Lego-themed video games in 2007. That led to the film, which has taken in more than $390 million worldwide.)"

On the future of the DC superhero universe on the big and small screen (including a new film series announcement):

As for DC Entertainment, cross-studio collaboration to make better use of its comic book characters appears to have accelerated considerably since Mr. Tsujihara took over, in part because he eliminated some management layers. (He has not named a chief operating officer and did not replace Mr. Rosenblum and Mr. Robinov, choosing instead to divide up their duties and assume some himself.) Two new television shows are coming to the CW and Fox, including one based on the Flash and another on a young Batman, and a film series will be announced in the near future, Mr. Tsujihara said. It is expected to include a “Justice League” movie.

So, to re-cap: J.K. Rowling's FANTASTIC BEASTS & WHERE TO FIND THEM will now be a trilogy, there are multiple sequels in the works for THE LEGO MOVIE (a potential NINJAGO film?), and a new "film series" for DC will be announced in the "near future" (Comic Con, perhaps?), which will include a JUSTICE LEAGUE movie. I'm cool to see a new Harry Potter-themed series from Rowling and THE LEGO MOVIE was a lot of fun so I'll certainly give it another go. As for the DC Cinematic Universe, the doors are wide open for speculation. Could they be announcing Dwayne Johnson's superhero role, which may or may not lead directly into JUSTICE LEAGUE or will it be something else entirely. It seems like the announcement of THE FLASH movie kind of came and went never to be heard from again, so who knows where that is sitting right now, especially as the TV show is set to debut later this year.

Out of all these tidbits, which are you most excited about? Which film series do you think WB will announce next for their DC Cinematic Universe? Let's hear it!

I'm really excited about DC's cinematic universe starting to unfold. I love Marvel, but I'm starting to get sick of all of their properties, it's time for some new stuff, and DC can provide that.

Did I really read "Arrow movie would be a good news"? Maybe for the fans of the show but as a "business move" it would have disaster written all over it for WB/DC. Then again it is what we are mostly used to from WB and DC.

I think DC should explore their characters through TV shows and direct-to-DVD/Blu Ray cartoons. Arrow really surprised me as it's really good in which I hope The Flash will be too. Also, DC is brilliant when it comes to animated movies. Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox and Batman Year One are superb.

Oh that too. Under the Red Hood is awesome, not to mention Green Arrow and The Spectre shorts. Both are good shorts as well.

Oversaturation of WB/DC movies...

WB is trying to do too much and is pretending to have it all together. They are really running around like mad trying to figure out how to copy the Marvel movies and failing miserably.

They are throwing a "mini -justice league party" in the next Superman movie, introducing characters int he worst ways possible. Then they are making another movie starring The Rock and throwing it all together hoping to make a Justice League movie that will be on par with Avengers.

It is pretty obvious

It is pretty obvious they are rushing, throwing logic out of the window and setting themselves up to fail. I am a HUGE DC fan, but the characters deserve better than what WB is giving them. WB is pretty much the FOX of the Marvel Universe.

Wow.....fanboy for Marvel much?

Seriously, what is it with you guys anyway? There is no way you are a HUGE DC fan because you would be happy they are getting things together and appreciating how great their TV is now.

No, I think your the one running around like mad 'cause DC is NOT doing what Marvel is doing. Just admit it. DC is doing what DC is doing, whether it's with Batman vs Superman, or creating multiple DC mini-series. Dude, not sure where you read, DC should follow Marvel.

What makes me laugh is when people say, DC is rushing it with their superheroes... funny, where you guys sitting next to Nolan and the WB execs in one of their meetings?

And people that holds The Avengers as the threshold

And people that holds The Avengers as the threshold for all superhero films, needs to get their heads in check. The Avengers was OK at best. The first 30 mins was a snooze fest! Terrible.

Also, people complaining about Batman vs Superman.. really? Really??? It's Batman AND Superman on the same silver screen! What are you complaining about?

I love that Masterdebator is basically acting as judge and jury, sight unseen on the upcoming DC films. His negative attitude already shows that he is not as big of a DC fan as he pretends to be. So you didnt like MoS? That doesnt mean the others wont be good. The biggest comic fanboy in the world is directing these, and even the Marvel movies dont all follow the same template. Look at how different Captain America feels from the others. If you just watched the first Cap, you would be hard

Look at how different Captain America feels from the others. If you just watched the first Cap, you would be hard stretched to make a judgement on the entire Marvel universe. If you ask me, the properties that are trying the hardest to replicate Marvel Studios success are the Xmen franchise and The Amazing Spiderman. Truth be told, I would worry most about Spiderman. DC is at least putting out there what they are doing, and knowing that its different, but rolling with it anyway.

Good to know joblo has someone with knowledge of WB /s

And how are they rushing? (only one movie and they even pushed back SvB), so far all we know is there is Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (Who knows, she should only have a small part). the rest? all rumours.

Beside Marvel was horrible in introducing Nick Fury, Coulson, Black Widow and Hawkeye....wait they didn't!

I like the Marvel movies, but I would definitely want to watch Justice League, and can't wait to see what they bring

I still don't understand why so many people say DC should do what Marvel did. Since when did movies needs a bunch of other movies covering the characters origins and whatever to make it good? I enjoyed X-Men without needing a Wolverine movie or a Cyclops movie beforehand. I enjoyed Watchmen without needing a Rorschach or Night Owl movie to "set it up". I guess it is cool what Marvel did but I don't see why it's necessary to enjoy an Avengers or Justice League movie. With that belief, you would

It's the fact that they actually took the time to set The Avengers up. Each character had his/her backstory.

It makes sense when it comes to audience, money and marketing. You have to remember movies are NEVER made for the fans. They are made to make as much money as possible. Movies like The Avengers never happened before. We never got a serious Team Up movie before featuring a ton of A list actors and hero counterparts. The closest we've come in the past are things like the horrible Hulk

Avengers set a precedence. Honestly it is the same thinking that got The Hobbit turned into three films too. Think of Iron Man, Hulk, Captain American as parts 1, 2 and 3 and Avengers being the finale.

You need to be a little smarter with your queries because the answer is right in front of you. $$$

So people that want DC to do what Marvel did are mostly concerned about the money WB makes? Sorry but I don't need my movies to be set up by 5 others movies in order to appreciate it.

I don't really think so either. The DC heroes are more well known to the general public and more iconic than the Marvel ones were. Most people didn't know anything about Iron Man before the film......or Black Widow or Hawkeye.

DC was just way bigger for longer, Marvel caught up with in the last 10 years with general audiences. I think a JL film doesn't really need those set up films as much as Marvel did.

Only Masterdebator88 wants a backstory of Superman, but only if it has the Marvel feel to it. You know the Marvel template; cheesy one-liners, jokes every now and then, and maybe add a little seriousness every now and then but end it with another joke. =)

Don't Follow Marvel!

I like what DC is doing, with Nolan on the helm, having more of a grounded/realistic comic book film theme. DC seemed to be taking their time and giving the audience not just the entertainment aspect but more of an intriguing storytelling to follow. Unlike Marvel, they seem to spew out films from left and right without any substances. Marvel is doing great in the bank don't get me wrong, but their films are nothing but cheesy one-liners, predictable storytelling, and flat out bland un-amusing

Sure their entertaining, but at the end, nothing really imaginative and worth taking in. I guess it's all about the money when it comes to Hollywood in the end.

I'd take quality over quantity any day.

No way!!! Marvel makes COMIC BOOK MOVIES THAT LOOK LIKE COMIC BOOKS?!?!

Gasp, what hell have we been living in for the past 8 years???

There is nothing wrong with the Marvel movies (besides any that FOX touches that wasn't First Class)

You must be a fanboy or something because from what I remember the last Superman movie SUCKED and was waaay worse than Iron Man 3 and thats not my opinion but the popular opinion. Superman was nothing but exposition after exposition after boring

Now the Dark Knight trilogy was great, didn't feel like a comic movie and was its own thing. It shouldn't be something other series should try to emulate. Superman isn't a brooding character like Batman. Batman lives in Gotham, a dark and horrible place. Superman lives in the bright Metropolis, there should be more than just a monochronistic grey tone to the whole city. It looked horrible.

Yes, the Marvel films are aimed more for children, but we can have both types of films. The only Marvel film so far that I have hated is Iron Man 3....oh and Agents of Shield. I enjoyed Thor: TDW and have good feelings about Capt 2.

I do prefer DC though, I love that they are aiming more for adults and just figuring kids can keep up...lol

I agree with Snoopmish, Marvel looks to be more aimed at children.

To say MoS is bland is like saying the first Captain America is Epic (which it was not). For what Snyder has done, bringing an alien to Earth with consequences was brilliant. Put your thinking cap on.

The only Marvel film that I really liked was the first Iron Man, it was fresh, intriguing... after that, it was all the same templates. I would say Cap 2 looks bad ass due to The Winter Soldier, hopefully it holds true...

Because the last Superman was such a good movie... Well, at least I guess you can say it was better than Green Lantern. And while I won't argue that Agents Of SHIELD isn't very good (it's getting slightly better, though), Arrow is pretty much on par and just as terrible.

And when you speak of quality, which movie(s) are you talking about? Maybe Nolan's second Batman? It was the better of the 3 after all and pretty much DC's only good decent movie. But really not as good when you watch it a

Blah Blah Blah *Random comment about how DC should do things like Marvel Studios*. Anyway, I would be willing to guess that the announcement will have something to do with Dwayne Johnsons rumored role. He's been telling us on the record that he has something worked out as part of the DC universe for a long time. Maybe they cast him in the long awaited Nightwing role??

I'm very intrigued to see what WB will make of this new trilogy which I'm hoping has all the soul and depth of the Harry Potter films. In regards to the DC films, I'm sure Justice League will be announced, as well as a Green Lantern reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, Wonder Woman movie release window, and possibly Aquaman.

I love the idea of Fantastic Beasts being long before Harry's timeline. That excites me. The DC news, being a comic book fanboy and use to be a hardcore DC guy is meh. If they could start building a movie franchise like Marvel has done I would be happy. I mean they are making baby steps (Man of Steel, The Batman Trilogy, Arrow) but I need more. Right now I'm just on the fence about the DC movie universe. Especially with the sketchy cast moves they've made for Batman VS. Superman.

I just really hope DC can repeat the same amazing quality with their films like Marvel has. Man of Steel was a great start (in my opinion of course). I firmly believe a Justice League could be better than The Avengers.

Im with you on this one man. Just follow Marvels formula. Just give us one of each till Justice League. Its not like this formula is this complex strategy and no one could come up with it. Man of Steel was awesome. Give me a batman akin to the arkham games. Reboot GL. Give us Wonder Woman and Flash or Aquaman and lead it into JL. This series could potentially DEMOLISH Avengers.

I just think DC has much as talent as Marvel to compete with them at this point. With the right balance and quality, Justice League could be amazing.

And if they do indeed get Dwayne Johnson involved, then that just means another big positive step forward for DC.

Sad. So sad. I agree, Justice League has far more potential, but that's on paper. In reality we are getting a rushed hackjob of a series and it started with Man of Steel trying to be too much of a monotoned, boring and dull movie.

There was no color to it. It was like looking at a piece of cement for 2 hours.

Now with the other movies, they are obviously being rushed too. There is no love or interest being put behind these films. They are being made for money and nothing more. They are

I love superhero lore.

I'm more up on Marvel than DC, that said, I hope DC gets things in order and takes a few risks aside from Superman and Batman. Ultimately there are plenty of characters/stories they can draw from. Grab the bull by the balls DC!... or horns, whatever.
