Tom Holland makes an uncomfortable phone call

As you can imagine, Tom Holland has a couple of big projects coming out this year. However, in order to participate in both, the Marvel star had to do certain rearranging of his schedule, which included a hopeful blessing of a movie studio.

The Hollywood Reporter reports on the recent GQ cover story on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson and Tom Holland talk about making the film and Holland reveals that he had to make a call to Sony to ask them if they could hold off filming on Spider-Man: Brand New Day so he could take part in Nolan’s film. Holland explained,

I said to Chris, like, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation.’ ”

He continued to say that Sony was, thankfully, accommodating.

I think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over, and we aren’t actually going to lose Tom for two years.’ Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.”

Holland would credit The Odyssey with helping Brand New Day since the epic fantasy film actually finished ahead of schedule.

The Odyssey almost saved Spider-Man because we wouldn’t have had Destin. He wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn’t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now,” he said. “I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened.”

Peter Parker’s Brand New Day

“After the record-breaking global success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man,” reads the official synopsis. “Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.“

Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) is directing from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. Holland has naturally returned as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and Jon Bernthal joins him as Frank Castle/Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion, and Marvin Jones III as Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone. Sadie Sink, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Tramell Tillman appear in unspecified roles.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31.
