28 Days Later: The new 4K Blu-ray release is missing a terrifying shot

Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later was officially released on 4K Ultra HD today, but horror fans are noticing that one brief, but iconic, shot from the film seems to be missing.

28 Days Later: The Missing Shot

The missing shot from the 4K release of 28 Days Later comes from the scene in which Jim (Cillian Murphy), Selena (Naomie Harris), Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and Hannah (Megan Burns) are driving through a dark tunnel when their tires blow out. It doesn’t take long until a horde of infected hear them and start racing towards them as they try to change the tires as quickly as possible. As they get back into the car in the nick of time, there’s a shot of a red-eyed infected illuminated by the rear lights, which is quite terrifying.

However, in the 4K release, the shot of the red-eyed infected is missing. Check it out below.

Although it is a quick shot, some horror fans aren’t very happy, with one saying, “I wanna support physical media, but getting mediocre re-releases that mess with the original film is not what I want.” It’s possible that whichever source was used for this new release just didn’t include the shot.

28 Years Later 3

Boyle directed 28 Days Later over twenty years ago, and he returned to the horror franchise with 28 Years Later. The film performed decently enough, but the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, was not a hit at the box office, despite earning rave reviews.

This has led some to wonder whether the third installment would actually happen, but Boyle told JoBlo earlier this year that the film will shoot in 2027.

We ran out of time. Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year – we literally ran out of time,” he said. “So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex [Garland] has done a wonderful script for it.

Cillian Murphy briefly reprises his role of Jim in The Bone Temple, and it’s expected that he’ll take on a bigger role in the third movie. Another reason I hope it happens.

Is the missing shot a deal-breaker for you when it comes to picking up 28 Days Later on 4K?
