I am surprised that it took this long to happen, but the ANGRY BIRDS movie has been announced for a 2016 release.

Producers John Cohen (DESPICABLE ME) and David Masiel (IRON MAN) will bring the movie to theaters along with game creator, Rovio Entertainment. The film will be CGI and released in 3D, a perfect format for the source material. No word on whether the story will be based on any of the games or if it will be wholly original. All signs point to the movie being as massive a success as the video games and tie-in merchandising even if it is not a very good film. Judging by the fact it is coming courtesy of the same folks who brought us the rancid garbage Easter Bunny movie, HOP, I am not holding out much hope at this point.

Rovio CEO Mikael Hed had this to say: “John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock. With John’s hands-on producer background and David’s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”

One interesting note about this news is that producer David Maisel was also the head of Marvel Studios and was instrumental in that brand becoming what it is today. Rovio will finance the film independently as to retain full control of the product. Maybe this has some promise after all.
