According to Bruce Campbell, his cameos in Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are the same characters

Sam Raimi’s star of his Evil Dead series may have a bigger role in the MCU than previously thought. At least that’s what Campbell has people to believe.

Sam Raimi is ever the loyal friend to his Evil Dead star, Bruce Campbell. Even when Universal Pictures wouldn’t allow him to cast Campbell as the lead in Darkman in favor of Liam Neeson, Raimi would still find a way to work Campbell in at the end. Then, Sam Raimi was given the job of a lifetime, bringing to life the popular Marvel web-slinging character in Spider-Man, and he would give Campbell a cameo as the announcer at the ill-fated wrestling match that sealed Peter Parker’s destiny. Recently, Raimi returned to the superhero genre with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, low and behold, Campbell appears as a pizza vendor in one of the many universes.

ComicBook.com spoke with Campbell as he promotes his new show, Discontinued, and the Ash actor revealed his cameos in the Spider-Man films, as well as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, are connected in some way to the multiverse, and Marvel just may explain his character away in a future project. “The cameos are like, in the Spider-Man movies — if you know anything about the multiverse, you know now, retroactively, I’m in the multiverse now because of Doctor Strange. I’m not a pizza vendor, OK? That would be a massive mistake to think I’m just a pizza vendor, or an usher, or a ring announcer, or a maître d’. It’s called the multiverse, my friend. So, yes, he is the same character, but we don’t know who he really is. It has not been revealed yet. I just got off the phone with the guys at Marvel, and we’re getting close to finding out.”

Campbell would play coy when explaining his involvement with Marvel Studios and gave the interviewer a signature sarcastic roundabout answer, “You’re assuming that I know anything about Marvel lore, and I appreciate that. I watched Doctor Strange in a movie theater, and I was like, ‘What the flying hell are they talking about?’ And then there was a guy who was an assistant type guy, and I was talking to him about it, and I go, ‘Man, there’s a lot of words, a lot of dialogue,’ and he goes, ‘Oh, no, no. I needed all of that. I needed to know all of that. I’m so grateful for that movie.’ And I’m like, ‘OK pal.’ So, yeah, I don’t know.”

Look out for our own interview with the man, the myth, the legend Bruce Campbell as we talk to him about Discontinued. The synopsis for his new show reads, “From the makers of The Movies That Made Us, Screen Legend Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead franchise), takes us on a journey through the past using products, phenomenons, and phrases that are gone but not forgotten. Weaving humanity’s story with once great brands like Blackberry and Blockbuster, Bruce and a team of comedians snarkily comment on the human condition, just before AI destroys it.”
Stay tuned this Friday!
