Beware of Dario Argento: 20 film retrospective comes to New York with Dark Glasses and 17 restorations

Film at Lincoln Center is gearing up to spend the second half of June celebrating the career of legendary Italian filmmaker and master of horror Dario Argento! IndieWire has broken the news that Film at Lincoln Center and Cinecittà are teaming up for Beware of Dario Argento: A 20-Film Retrospective, an event that will be held at the Walter Reade Theater from June 17th through the 29th. This event will include the world premiere of seventeen restorations of older Argento films, as well as the North American premiere of his new film Dark Glasses, which is coming to the Shudder streaming service later this year.

The line-up of the retrospective includes The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Cat o’ Nine Tails, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, The Five Days, Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno, Tenebrae, Phenomena, Opera, The Black Cat (Argento’s segment of the anthology film Two Evil Eyes), Trauma, The Stendhal Syndrome, The Phantom of the Opera, Sleepless, The Card Player, Do You Like Hitchcock?, Mother of Tears, Dracula 3D, and Dark Glasses. Argento will be on hand to introduce Suspiria, Tenebrae, and Dark Glasses. Q&As with Argento will accompany the screenings of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Deep Red, and Phenomena.

Chiara Sbarigia, president of Cinecittà, had this to say about the event:

We are delighted to celebrate the 30th anniversary of our ongoing partnership with Film at Lincoln Center, by offering its audience the world premiere of 17 restorations of Dario Argento’s magnificent works, prepared by our laboratory at Cinecittà. Following the record-breaking 2018 Luchino Visconti and 2019 Ermanno Olmi retrospectives, we have decided to come back after these difficult months with Dario Argento, whose retrospective has already been booked by international venues for the next two years.”

Dennis Lim, director of programming at Film at Lincoln Center and artistic director of the New York Film Festival, added:

It is always a pleasure to collaborate with Cinecittà, partner on some of our most popular retrospectives of all time, and this time in honor of a living legend. To be able to present these striking new restorations to New York audiences with Dario Argento in person is a thrill and honor.”
