The Last of the Mohicans

Remember when is was usually television shows made into movies and not the other way around? Now there's Bates Hotel on A&E and NBC's Hannibal as well as FX's upcoming Fargo with the Coen Brothers. THR has learned that FX is developing another series with movie ties and it's an adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's classic novel The Last of The Mohicans called Mohicans. The 1992 film version starring Daniel Day-Lewis and directed by Michael Mann was praised by critics when it was released and in particular Day-Lewis' portrayal of Hawkeye.

The series will have another connection to the film besides the source material. Chris Crowe helped co-write the 1992 screenplay and he'll be working on the script for Mohicans with Kerry McCluggage (Miami Vice) and Steve Beck co-producing. The series will cover America's early history from the perspective of the characters in Cooper's novel so Mohican might end up a little different than the film or even the book.

FX has some interesting series in the works that includes Conquistadors (based on the novel The Last Days of the Incas), Mayflower with Paul Giamatti, Grand Hotel from Sam Mendes, Mad Dog (an adaptation by Shawn Ryan of the British series), Sutton (based on the J.R. Moehringer novel and adapted by Alexander Payne), a six-part Vietnam War series called They Marched Into Sunlight by Stephen Gaghan and the previously mentioned Fargo.

I'm a huge fan of the movie but I do think a series like this could work. Sure I wish Mohicans didn't have a film or novel connection and the creators could just write an original story about America's beginnings as a country but if the limited series turns out to be as epic as the film I'm going to have to check it out.
