Another day, another movie moves off its 2020 release date as the pandemic has now claimed Gerard Butler's GREENLAND. The film was slated for release on September 25, 2020, but the STX disaster flick will now open sometime in the fourth quarter at a still to be determined date.
This is just more bad news for exhibitors as the movie release calendar is going to be pretty scarce. There are no significant releases opening the rest of September and CANDYMAN and WONDER WOMAN 1984 both departed the October release cycle. CANDYMAN will be released at a still to be determined date in 2021 while WONDER WOMAN 1984 will be a nice holiday gift, hopefully, on December 25, 2020. BLACK WIDOW is still slated to open on November 6, 2020, but I'd put big money on that film moving off its planned release date as well. There is also the latest 007 entry, NO TIME TO DIE which is expected to open on November 20, 2020, but we'll have to keep our fingers crossed on that one. That only leaves us with DUNE on December 18, 2020, and the aforementioned WONDER WOMAN 1984. 2020 is looking more and more like a wash when it comes to movie theaters making any traction this year to make up for their losses.
GREENLAND stars Butler as John Garrity, whose family must fight for survival as a planet-killing comet race to earth. He and his estranged wife, along with their young son, embark on a monumental trek that culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven.
The film has gotten off to a promising start overseas, opening at number one in 13 markets and grossing $12.5 million to date. STX is hoping that when GREENLAND finally opens domestically, the shuttered theaters in Los Angeles and New York will be back online to breathe more life into the box office.
