Doctor Who and Terminator veteran Matt Smith joins Morbius

Doctor Who Matt Smith

Since playing The Doctor in over fifty episodes of Doctor Who, Matt Smith has gone on to appear in several genre projects – he has been in TERMINATOR: GENISYS, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, and PATIENT ZERO, and plays Charles Manson in the upcoming film CHARLIE SAYS. Next up he'll be sharing the screen with a bloodsucker, as he has signed on to co-star in MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE, the second film in Sony's attempt at making films about Spider-Man characters without featuring Spider-Man. (The first was VENOM.)

Jared Leto will be playing the title character,

Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength.

Adria Arjona has been cast as Morbius's fiancee Martine Bancroft – an important role, because she

could be said to be accidentally responsible for Morbius’ transformation into a vampire-like creature, as it’s the human Morbius’ love for fiancee Martine that drives him to experiment on himself.

Details on the role Matt Smith will be playing have not been revealed, all Variety could dig up was that it is "a major role in the film".

LIFE's Daniel Espinosa will be directing the film from a screenplay by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the duo behind Netflix's reboot of Lost in Space. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Lucas Foster are the producers, with Palak Patel overseeing for Sony.

I didn't really like TERMINATOR: GENISYS or PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES (and haven't seen PATIENT ZERO), so hopefully this will be a better post-Who project for Smith than those movies were.
