When it was announced that Paramount's reboot of their successful THE RING franchise has landed F. Javier Gutierrez to helm the next chapter, titled RINGS, I suddenly perked up and took notice. After being attached to THE CROW reboot for so long it was suprising that Gutierrez had decided to move on to RINGS and it made me wonder what this newest incarnation of the J-horror franchise that will star Italian actress Matilda Lutz had to offer that would attract the director to the project. While details on RINGS have been slim for some time, our brothers in blood at Bloody Disgusting have learned some new information that is certainly intriguing.

Their sources tell them that RINGS is actually a prequel, and takes place before the 2002 remake that starred Naomi Watts as a woman uncovering the mystery behind a haunted VHS tape. The film will take place years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara’s reign of terror.

Akiva Goldsman, David Loucka and Jacon Aaron Estes all had a hand in writing the script, which is based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. It seems like they're keen to deliver a new angle on the story, and it's one that will give us a reason to go down the reboot path with yet another horror franchise.

RINGS will hit theaters November 13, 2015.
