R.L. Stine’s Fear Street: Netflix releases trailer for July trilogy event

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Director Leigh Janiak shot a trilogy of films based on the Fear Street book series written by R.L. Stine back-to-back-to-back, so it's fitting that Netflix is going to be releasing the films back-to-back-to-back this summer. When Netflix acquired the rights to the trilogy last year, it was said that they would be releasing the films on a monthly basis, an event they would be marketing as "The Summer of Fear". Plans have changed. The "film trilogy event" is no longer monthly, these movies are going to be released over three consecutive weeks in July.

Fear Street Part 1: 1994 will be available to watch on the Netflix streaming service as of July 2nd. Fear Street Part 2: 1978 follows on July 9th, and Fear Street Part 3: 1666 wraps things up on July 16th.

Janiak co-wrote all three films, crafting the story for part 1 with Kyle Killen and Phil Graziadei and part 2 with Graziadei and Zak Olkewicz. Janiak then wrote part 1 with Graziadei, part 2 with Olkewicz, and part 3 with Graziadei and Kate Trefry.

In 1994, a group of teenagers discovers that the terrifying events that have haunted their town for generations may all be connected — and that they may be the next targets. Based on R.L. Stine’s best selling horror series, the trilogy follows the nightmare through Shadyside’s sinister history.

The trilogy was produced by Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and David Ready. Kori Adelson produced 1666 and executive produced the other two. Janiak executive produced the trilogy with Timothy M. Bourne, Yvonne M. Bernard, Joan Waricha, and Jane Stine.

Janiak had this to say about Netflix's release plan:

We filmed all three Fear Street movies over one crazy, bloody summer. It’s a dream that audiences now get to experience the story in the same way – back to back to back, with only a week of waiting in between. I can’t wait to welcome everyone into the world of Fear Street in 1994, 1978 and 1666!"

R.L. Stine added:

Fear Street fans are in for a treat – and some major surprises. Readers know that the book series is rated PG. But the movies are rated R. That means a lot more thrills – and a lot more terror! I have seen Leigh Janiak's epic trilogy releasing on Netflix in July and I can tell you the scares and the SCREAMS are more than I ever expected. What fun to see the horrors of Shadyside come to life!"
