It’s almost official: Mel Gibson looks to join Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills!

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Well we knew Robert Rodriguez wanted Mel Gibson for his upcoming sequel MACHETE KILLS but we didn’t know if there was any interest in the project on Mr. Gibson’s end. Considering it takes two to tango I’d say that’s a deal breaker. But alas thanks to Deadline New York we now know Gibson is indeed interested in joining the project!

So much so that apparently the actor is in ‘serious negotiations’ to join the project. That usually means things are a done deal but I suppose there’s always a chance for that to fall through. So you’ll want to wait for some official confirmation before getting too excited. There’s no telling who Gibson would be playing in the film but I’m sure Rodriguez will have something juicy cooked up for him.

In other MACHETE KILLS news Rodriguez recently chatted with The Hollywood Reporter about the possibility of handing the directing reigns on MACHETE KILLS to somebody else, you know if SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR gets in the way. Peep exactly what Rodriguez was spilling:

“Currently I am directing it. But we’re checking to see if there’s going to be the need for another director if I have to go off and do Sin City. I wasn’t sure what the timing on Sin City was or if I would have to step off to do Sin City at a certain point, depending on when Machete went. But Machete looks like it’s going to go pretty quickly so it’s possible that I will direct the whole thing.”

“There’s so much of it that I want to direct I’ll probably end up directing the whole thing. But if I have to step off, I’m going to try and shoot all of the actors and all of the main sequences. But it’s such a fun movie, and it just came out even more fun than I could have imagined.”

“I feel like I really need to do it. It’s so subjective I feel like I really need to get in there and do it. It’s just a lot of fun; it’s a really cool concept, and I think it takes it to another level in a way that’s compelling for me to go and do it myself.”

Would MACHETE KILLS be the same if Rodriguez doesn’t direct it? Of course not! So here’s hoping the filmmaker finds the time. If worse comes to worse hopefully he’ll at least get MACHETE co-director Ethan Maniquis to step in.

The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.

Danny Trejo is the only confirmed cast for MACHETE KILLS but I’m sure that will change very soon. As more MACHETE KILLS news spills our way you can be sure we’ll be right here to pass along every single update to all of you.
