Listen to a sample of Jonny Greenwood’s score for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master

JoBloJoBlo

Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead’s lead guitarist and the unconventional composer for director Paul Thomas Anderson’s THERE WILL BE BLOOD, is teaming up with the filmmaker once again for THE MASTER.  Anderson has used music in some interesting ways with his films, taking a completely non-traditional approach that oftentimes works quite well.  Some may find Greenwood’s music to be droning at times, but I think it absolutely works when it’s working.

Case in point, this composition from THE MASTER (track 13) entitled “Application 45 Version 1,” which sounds very much like what we’ve heard in the trailers thus far.

Here’s the film’s synopsis:

A charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a religious organization following World War II. A drifter (Phoenix) becomes his right-hand man but as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.

THE MASTER, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, and Kevin J. O’Connor, releases on September 21, 2012.
