A24 drops creepy tease for Hereditary director’s new movie Sommar

It may not have been nominated for any Oscars, but there’s no doubt HEREDITARY was one of the best movies of the year, featuring one of the best performances of the year from Toni Collette. The movie was a critical darling and became A24’s biggest hit ever with $80 million globally, all of which puts a lot of pressure on director Ari Aster to deliver a worthy follow-up. We don’t know much about his new movie, SOMMAR (once titled MIDSOMMAR), but we do now have a creepy-ass teaser to go with it, and really, that’s all you need.

A24 took to Twitter to drop the teaser this morning, using nothing but an off-putting video of a drawing of girls dancing around a type of wooden stake in the ground – which means they’re either playing a game or about to summon some sort of demon. Could go either way.

What we do know about the movie is the general story and the cast, including Will Poulter (BLACK MIRROR: BANDERSNATCH), Florence Pugh (FIGHTING WITH MY FAMILY), Jack Reynor (FREE FIRE), William Jackson Harper (THE GOOD PLACE), Vilhem Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madekwe. The story finds a couple traveling to Sweden to visit a friend’s rural hometown and check out its mid-summer festival. What soon starts out as a lovely vacation to sunny Sweden turns into a violent, bizarre competition spearheaded by a pagan cult, proving you never trust little girls dancing around in the fields.

Aster talked about the movie a bit in the past, calling it an “apocalyptic break up movie,” one inspired by “Scandinavian folk horror.” So, yes, we will all be there.

SOMMAR hits theaters August 9.
