Gareth Evans' Apostle gets a brutal, grisly first trailer

Gareth Evans made a name for himself with the visceral, brutal and generally awesome THE RAID movies, and now he’s shifting into the realm of horror movies with APOSTLE. The first trailer for the movie is here and shows that Evans has entered some new territory, but still puts on a display of the same kind of genre thrills fans of his previous movies have come to expect. There’s just, you know, more religious and cult stuff in there with Michael Sheen looking terrifying as all hell.

The movie centers on Dan Stevens’ Thomas Richardson, a man who sets out to save his sister who's been lured into new, dark cult headed by Sheen’s charismatic Prophet Malcolm. He soon discovers the much darker, more twisted elements of the group, as wells as the equally grim secrets they’re hiding. Lucy Boynton, Mark Lewis Jones, Bill Milner, Kristine Froseth, and Paul Higgins make up the rest of the cast.

The movie looks utterly brutal and violent, taking the subject matter to the next level and embracing a grisly kind of madness. What I’m trying to say is the movie looks fantastic, and Evans looks to have made a seamless transition between action and horror. Stevens and Sheen seem to be doing some incredible work, with the former cementing himself as a fine leading man and the latter proving why he’s simply one of the best around.

Here is the full synopsis:

London, 1905. Prodigal son Thomas Richardson (Dan Stevens) has returned home, only to learn that his sister is being held for ransom by a religious cult. Determined to get her back at any cost, Thomas travels to the idyllic island where the cult lives under the leadership of the charismatic Prophet Malcolm (Michael Sheen). As Thomas infiltrates the island’s community, he learns that the corruption of mainland society that they claim to reject has infested the cult’s ranks nonetheless – and uncovers a secret far more evil than he could have imagined. Written and directed by Gareth Evans (THE RAID), APOSTLE is a harrowing occult fable where the only thing more horrifying than madness is the sinister reality behind it.

APOSTLE hits Netflix October 12.
