Jason Reitman to direct secret Ghostbusters film for a 2020 release

Who you gonna call? Jason Reitman, apparently.

Numerous venues are reporting that director Jason Reitman is gearing up to direct a mysterious new GHOSTBUSTERS film that is aiming for a summer 2020 debut. Written by Reitman and Gil Kenan (who directed MONSTER HOUSE, POLTERGEIST and CITY OF EMBER), the new "secret" project is said to be a continuation of the 1984 original, which was directed by Reitman's father, Ivan Reitman. Of course, that means it would not be connected to the 2016 reboot, which fanned the flames of Internet ire and failed to impress critics or the box office. Whether or not it would address the sequel to the original, 1989's GHOSTBUSTERS II, is unclear.

The other big question would be if any of the original cast would be returning, including Bill Murray (who famously avoids any such sequels like the plague), Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson (Harold Ramis, who played Egon, died in 2014). No story details have been revealed, although Reitman is apparently "testing teenagers for four mystery roles", which could mean any manner of things; offspring of the original characters or new characters altogether? Only Reitman, Kenan and Sony know, but rest assured this ghost of a franchise is returning to haunt us. Still, this sounds like a much better prospect than a stunt-casted reboot, so there's that. It's also both surprising and inspired to bring Jason Reitman on board to direct, as he's really cut his teeth on some outstanding indie/dramatic fare throughout his career thus far, so it'll be interesting to see what he does with a franchise that's now ingrained in his family legacy. Here's to hoping he can capture what his father did so well.

More to come as this develops.

What are your thoughts on this? Should Sony be trying to revive this franchise again or should they leave these spirits alone?
