Mark Hamill to voice Chucky in upcoming Child’s Play movie

STAR WARS icon Mark Hamill may have evaporated into the orange sky in THE LAST JEDI, but now he’s trading in his lightsaber and cloak for a butcher knife and a pair of lovely overalls as the new voice of the murderous doll Chucky in the upcoming CHILD’S PLAY movie. The news was made official this weekend at WonderCon where the man himself posted a video saying he will be lending his voice to the plastic maniac with a mop of red hair, reminding us that your best friend will always be there for you…in one way or another.

“I can’t wait to bring such an iconic character to life and present him in a way you’ve never seen him before…We’re gonna have some fun,” Hamill said. “And remember, he’s more than just a toy; he’s your best friend.” If the voice he gives to Chucky is at all as unsettling as that final look he gives in the video, we should all prepare for one horrifying experience.

Hamill’s casting may come as a bit of a shock to some fans of the long-running series who hoped longtime Chucky voice actor Brad Dourif would be returning to the role, but that would make sense given this movie also doesn’t have involvement from series creator Don Mancini. Directed by Lars Klevberg, produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith and written by Tyler Burton Smith, the team clearly wanted to set themselves apart from the past movies. Other than Hamill, the new CHILD’S PLAY stars Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry.

Thoughts? Dourif no doubt created an iconic character with a menacing voice in the past movies, but Hamill has proven himself time and again a master voice actor in his own right. Beyond his work in video games and shows like ROBOT CHICKEN, the actor gave a legendary series of performances as the Joker in BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, as well as the new series of Batman video games. He’s an excellent choice to tackle Chucky, and we can only imagine how we will bring the murderous toy to life.
