New Hellboy movie pushed back three months to April 2019

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Anyone excited for the new HELLBOY movie is going to have to make some very upsetting changes to their calendar today. We know you were pumped to bring in the new year by seeing the movie starring David Harbour as Big Red on January 11, 2019, but now it will be more of a pre-summer treat as Summit Entertainment has officially announced (via THR) that the movie will open on April 12, 2019.

The shift is a bold and risky one, as the movie has left the relatively calm month of January – where it’s only major competition would the movie GLASS – into the much busier April. In its new release date, the movie comes out one week after the DC movie SHAZAM!, and on the same week, Universal plans to release the new DR. DOLITTLE movie with Robert Downey Jr. As well, should Marvel do the same thing as they did with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR and release AVENGERS 4 at the end of April, HELLBOY would have two weeks before dealing with the release of what could be the biggest comic book movie ever.

Moving the release date makes sense, given that we are only a few months out and have seen very little in the way of promotion materials, which is odd for a movie with this level of anticipation. Chances are the filmmakers just need a bit more time with the movie, and we could see the first footage by the end of the year.

The movie stars Harbour as the titular character, taking over the role from Ron Perlman, who played the character across two movies in 2004 and 2008. Neil Marshall is directing the movie with a script from Mike Mignola, the comic’s creator, and Andrew Cosby and Christopher Golden. Actors Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sophie Okonedo, Sasha Lane and Daniel Dae Kim also star.
