Simon Kinberg reveals when Wolverine 3 will take place

Hugh Jackman has one more solo Wolverine film on his punch card before he finally hangs it up as the character for good. Having played Wolverine for the last 16 years, he's finally ready to move on and do something else with his career full-time. As a result, there's a great deal of curiosity in what is being planned for Jackson's mutant swan song. What story arc might they borrow from from the X-Men comics? What new characters might be brought in to send Wolverine off into the sunset in style? Is this going to be Old Man Logan-centric?

All those questions remain unanswered, but producer Simon Kinberg did at least clarify where on the timeline this latest chapter of Wolverine would take place.

The Wolverine movie takes place in the future.

I guess that settles it in a remarkably unspecific way. It could take place the day after the last time we saw Wolverine in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. It could take place ten years from then. It could be 20 years after we perhaps see Jackman make an appearance in X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Who knows? But it won't be going backwards in time, so at least we have one possibility to cross off our collective speculation list.

WOLVERINE 3 is set for release on March 3, 2017.
